What is reverse osmosis? The principle behind the Jimmy R9
Reverse osmosis is a physical water treatment process that works by reversing the natural osmosis process. Normally, during osmosis, water would move from the side with a low concentration of dissolved substances (pure water) to the side with a higher concentration (e.g. salt water) in order to equalize the concentration. This process takes place through a semi-permeable membrane that only allows water molecules to pass through, but not dissolved substances such as salts or pollutants.
Reverse osmosis does the opposite: By applying pressure to the side with the contaminated water (raw water), it is forced to pass through the semi-permeable membrane and reach the other side with a lower concentration. This pressure must be greater than the natural osmotic pressure, which drives the concentration equalization.
