To celebrate Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, SanDisk is releasing two new storage solutions featuring Mew and Mewtwo designs: a portable SSD with speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s and a USB-C flash drive with up to 128 GB of storage. Both are officially licensed by The Pokémon Company International and are available now.
At a glance:
- SanDisk Pokémon Portable SSD, Mewtwo Edition: 500 GB or 1 TB, up to 1,000 MB/s, drop-resistant up to 2 meters
- SanDisk Pokémon USB-C Flash Drive, Mew Edition: up to 128 GB, up to 250 MB/s
- Both models feature Mew and Mewtwo, respectively, as tactile 2D relief designs on the casing
- Sales have already begun in the U.S. and the U.K.; SanDisk has not yet commented on availability in Germany
Two Pokémon, two uses
Instead of a single collector’s item, SanDisk has divided the collection by use case. Mew represents the compact, portable drive, while Mewtwo represents the version with more storage and speed. Anyone familiar with the games will immediately recognize the concept: Mew is light and agile, while Mewtwo is the power-focused variant. SanDisk has apparently deliberately applied these character traits to the product line.

SanDisk Pokémon Portable SSD, Mewtwo Edition
The Mewtwo Edition is the more powerful of the two devices. It comes as an external SSD with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and, according to the spec sheet, is rated for sequential read speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s—which would be up to five times faster than a traditional external hard drive. By comparison, internal NVMe SSDs now reach well over 10,000 MB/s; however, for a rugged external drive used to back up photos, videos, and game recordings, speeds in this range are quite respectable.

SanDisk Pokémon USB-C Flash Drive, Mew Edition
The Mew Edition is designed to be significantly smaller: a pocket-sized USB-C flash drive that, according to SanDisk, can hold around 5,000 photos. Read speeds reach up to 250 MB/s, which is enough for quickly transferring photos and videos between your smartphone, tablet, and computer.

Prices and Availability in Germany
Both models are already available for order through SanDisk’s U.S. and U.K. stores. There has been no official announcement yet regarding German prices or a specific launch date in Germany. Due to taxes and import costs, the listed US and UK prices cannot be directly converted to retail prices in euros, but they do provide a rough guide. We will update this article as soon as SanDisk announces details regarding the German market launch.
Why Mew and Mewtwo, of all Pokémon?
SanDisk cites the two Pokémon’s popularity as the reason for their selection. Susan Park, VP of Consumer Product Management at SanDisk, is quoted in the press release as saying: “Pokémon has inspired creativity and personal memories for generations, and we want to give fans new ways to take their most important moments and content with them.” Mew and Mewtwo have been among the most famous Pokémon since the first generation, in part due to their central role in the first Pokémon movie from 1998.
Conclusion
With the Pokémon Portable SSD and the Pokémon USB-C Flash Drive, SanDisk is introducing two storage solutions that are technically solid mid-range products and derive their appeal primarily from their licensed designs. If you’re already looking for a new backup drive or a flash drive for on the go and are a Pokémon fan, this is a device that stands out from the crowd in the electronics market.
