Adobe removes PANTONE colors from Photoshop

Adobe removes PANTONE colors from Photoshop: Starting in November 2022, Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers will need an additional subscription if they want to continue using most of PANTONE’s color libraries. This is due to licensing changes between the two companies.

PANTONE colors disappear from Adobe products

Back in the summer, Adobe decided to gradually remove PANTONE’s color libraries from its products with Creative Cloud due to a new licensing model. Now, in November 2022, the change is happening gradually.

This is particularly annoying for users of Adobe products like Photoshop who rely on the colors. These see, without the additional subscription, henceforth only black, as among other things designer Ian Anderson on Twitter communicates.

Even with 20-year-old PSD files with a corresponding PANTONE color, all colors are removed and only black is displayed without the corresponding subscription. In a few days the PANTONE color books are to be removed gradually from all Adobe products such as Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop.

After that, only the “Pantone + CMYK coated,” “Pantone + CMYK uncoated” and “Pantone + metallic coated” color books will be available, Adobe announces in a support document.

“Customers who rely on Pantone colors in their creative workflows will need a Pantone license through the Pantone Connect plug-in available in Adobe Exchange,” Adobe added.

PANTONE Subscription Costs 15 Euros – Per Month

So by eliminating the license, a separate PANTONE subscription is necessary to continue using the full color libraries. And that is truly no bargain: 14.99 euros per month or 89.99 euros per year is called up for the Pantone Connect subscription, as can be seen from the website of Pantone.

In teams and companies, even up to 149.99 euros per user and year are called. So it’s no wonder that this move is causing a lot of resentment among creatives. With a rating of 1.5 out of 5 stars with 374 reviews, the Pantone plugin gets its due on Adobe’s Creative Cloud marketplace. And that’s despite the fact that the discontinuation of PANTONE colors was already decided in the spring.
