Google is once again shaking up the ecosystem between Android and iOS. Following the first demonstration of functioning AirDrop compatibility between Apple’s devices and Google’s Pixel 10 smartphones at the end of 2025, the next step has now been taken. Google has officially confirmed that AirDrop interoperability will be extended to other Android devices in 2026. This could remove one of the biggest hurdles between the two platforms – the previously very limited cross-platform file sharing.
- AirDrop compatibility to come to more Android smartphones in 2026
- Previously exclusively available for Pixel 10 devices with Quick Share
- Google relies on its own technical implementation without Apple’s involvement
- Support planned for iPhones, iPads and Macs
AirDrop Android: How Google connects Quick Share with Apple’s system
The basis for the new openness is Google’s Quick Share function, which was surprisingly made compatible with Apple’s AirDrop at the end of 2025. Technically, this is not a cooperation with Apple, but an independent implementation. According to Google, it has reverse-engineered AirDrop and expanded Quick Share so that files can be transferred directly between Android and Apple devices. This was made possible, among other things, by expanding the Quick Share extension from a simple system component to a fully-fledged APK with its own Play Store publication.
Google has placed particular emphasis on security and data protection. Communication between Quick Share and AirDrop is based on the Rust programming language, which is considered memory-safe and prevents many typical sources of error at compiler level. In addition, internal threat analyses, data protection checks and penetration tests were carried out. External security experts from NetSPI were also involved in order to identify potential vulnerabilities at an early stage.
The previous range of functions was limited to the Pixel 10 series, but clearly served as proof of concept. The file transfer works not only with iPhones, but also with iPads and MacBooks, which significantly increases the practical benefits. It is precisely this successful test phase that now forms the basis for the planned expansion to other Android manufacturers.
Expansion to other devices: What Google is planning for 2026
The decisive confirmation came at the beginning of 2026 during a press event as part of the Pixel Labs tour in Taipei. Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform, explained that AirDrop interoperability will be extended to “a lot more devices” this year. According to him, Google is already actively working with partners to integrate the feature into the wider Android ecosystem.
It is therefore clear that AirDrop compatibility will not remain an exclusive feature of the Pixel. However, Google did not specify which manufacturers or models will benefit. It is also unclear whether certain hardware requirements must be met or whether the function can be added later purely on the software side. It is likely that newer devices with the latest Android versions will be given preference in order to comply with security and performance standards.
If Google implements its plans as announced, this could significantly simplify the cross-platform exchange of photos, videos and documents. Especially in mixed households or work environments with Android and Apple devices, Quick Share with AirDrop support would close a long-awaited gap. At the same time, it remains to be seen how Apple will react to this development in the long term, as the function was developed without the company’s direct involvement.
Conclusion: A big step for cross-platform collaboration
The confirmed expansion of AirDrop compatibility to other Android smartphones marks an important milestone for collaboration between previously isolated ecosystems. Google shows that technical barriers can be overcome even without official partnerships. Concrete devices, prices or timetables for the launch are still pending, but corresponding announcements are expected to follow in the course of 2026. If the implementation goes smoothly, AirDrop on Android could become a real convenience feature in everyday life.
