AirPods Pro 2: In-ears with Lossless support and new design?

The Apple AirPods Pro also impressed with their 2021 re-release in our review. According to rumors, we can expect a true successor this year. The AirPods Pro 2 are said to get Apple Lossless support, a new design, as well as a charging case with sound to find.

AirPods Pro 2: That’s what the new rumors say

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo kicks off 2022 with extensive rumors about the AirPods Pro 2, which Apple is rumored to launch at the end of the year. That’s according to the MacRumors website, citing a note to investors.

According to this, Apple is planning numerous technical improvements for the new edition of its TWS in-ear headphones with active noise cancellation. According to Kuo, one highlight will be support for Apple Lossless Audio (ALAC). However, it remains to be seen how this can be reconciled with the limitations imposed by Bluetooth connectivity.

In a recent published interview, Gary Geaves, VP of Acoustics at Apple, revealed that the company would like to have a wireless audio standard that allows for a wider bandwidth than is currently the case with Bluetooth.

In addition, the AirPods Pro 2 are said to be getting a new design. It’s said to be reminiscent of the Beats Fit Pro and come without a stem that protrudes from the ear at all. Instead, the Pro 2s are to be held in the ears with “wingtips.”

More sensors and a charging case that makes sounds

He also expects the AirPods Pro 2 to come with new sensors. There is also talk of greater integration of health management features, although Kuo is not sure if this will already be accomplished in the new Pro models.

However, there will also be a new charging case that is able to emit sounds. It is supposed to be directly integrated into Apple’s “Where is?” network and can signal its default location with a sound. It is currently unclear whether it will be possible to locate the device as precisely as with the AirTag.

Kuo assumes that the Apple AirPods Pro 2 will be released in the fourth quarter of 2022, just in time for the launch of the new iPhone 14 generation (which might come without a sim card slot).
