Amazon is officially bringing Alexa+ to Germany and adding generative AI functions to the well-known voice assistant. As part of an early access program, around a year after its launch in the USA, the first users will have access to a significantly more intelligent version of Alexa, which is designed to hold natural conversations, perform tasks independently and adapt better to personal habits. Alexa+ is thus increasingly evolving from a classic voice assistant into a comprehensive ambient AI that links devices, services and everyday tasks.

  • Generative AI enables more natural conversations and contextual understanding
  • Alexa+ can perform tasks such as reservations or smart home control itself
  • Support for services such as Spotify, OpenTable, Prime Video and Apple Music
  • Can be used free of charge during the early access phase

Alexa+ is intended to significantly expand the classic voice assistant

With Alexa+, Amazon is taking a new approach to voice assistants. Instead of simple voice commands, the focus is now on much more natural communication. Users can continue conversations, change topics and do not have to keep repeating the activation word. Alexa+ remembers the context of conversations and should therefore respond much more smoothly than previous Alexa versions.

The new AI works across all devices. For example, conversations can be started on an Echo device and continued later via the Alexa app or, in future, even in the browser. Amazon therefore describes Alexa+ as so-called “ambient AI”, which integrates itself as unobtrusively as possible into everyday life and only becomes active when it is needed.

Another focus is on personalization. Alexa+ learns about preferences, routines and habits in the household and adapts suggestions and responses accordingly. According to Amazon, the system has been specially tailored to German users. This includes regional language variants, cultural characteristics and local content. For example, Alexa understands different terms such as “Brötchen”, “Schrippen” or “Semmeln” and also responds to typical German idioms.

Amazon also integrates numerous content and services directly into Alexa+. These include Spotify, Apple Music, Prime Video, Audible and OpenTable. Further partners such as Tripadvisor, Kinoheld and GMX are set to follow in the course of the year. This means that Alexa+ can not only provide information, but can actually take on tasks – such as making restaurant reservations, creating calendar appointments or controlling smart home devices.

Focus on smart home, data protection and AI functions

Alexa+ is likely to make a significant leap forward, especially in the smart home sector. Users can control several devices simultaneously using natural language or create complex routines without having to program individual commands. One interesting feature is the ability to interpret indirect statements. For example, if it is mentioned that it is too cold, Alexa+ can automatically adjust the heating.

Current news and media content are also more integrated. Users have access to content from ARD, BILD and Der Spiegel as well as numerous local radio stations. Alexa+ is thus increasingly developing into a central platform for entertainment, smart home and organization.

When it comes to data protection, Amazon continues to emphasize the control options for users. Voice recordings and interactions can be managed and deleted in the data protection portal or directly in the Alexa app. In addition, compatible devices continue to have physical microphone and camera shut-offs as well as visible status indicators.

Access is initially via the Early Access program. Customers can participate in Early Access in two ways:

  1. They buy a new Echo device such as an Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, Echo Dot Max or Echo Studio.
  2. If you already own a compatible Echo device, you can register here to receive an invitation.

Conclusion

With Alexa+, Amazon is bringing generative AI to its Alexa ecosystem in Germany for the first time. The voice assistant understands natural conversations better, takes on tasks independently and integrates numerous services directly into everyday life. The combination of smart home control, personalized functions and cross-device use in particular could make Alexa+ significantly more attractive than previous voice assistants. The service remains free of charge during the early access phase. After that, Alexa+ will be included for Prime members, while non-Prime customers will have to pay 22.99 euros per month.
