With the Video Doorbell, Blink is launching its first product after the takeover by Amazon. The device can be installed both wired and wirelessly and is used to monitor your own front door.
Scope of functions: look outside the door
The functional scope of the video doorbell is quite limited: With it, it becomes possible to take a look at your own front door without having to move there. The doorbell records videos as soon as it registers movements or is pressed. The recorded images can be accessed by users via an app. They also receive a real-time notification of a new event at the doorbell.
The device can also be connected to the existing doorbell. If this option is used, the already known ringtone of the previously installed doorbell is additionally triggered when pressing Amazon’s device. Furthermore, there is the possibility to connect the device with Echo or Fire products and thus be able to control it via voice command.
Up to two years runtime
Features the Video Doorbell is equipped with two AA lithium batteries. These are said to last up to two years when the device is also wired or connected to a Sync Module 2. Battery life also depends on the type of use as well as the selected device settings.
Price and availability
The device is available now for around 60 euros. Subscription fees are added, provided Amazon’s cloud is used to store the pictures and videos. Those who do not want to use this storage service have to equip the device with the Sync Module 2 and a USB flash drive, which has to be purchased separately, to use all features.
