Amazon Echo Buds: in-ear headphones with Alexa available for pre-order

Amazon is launching the second generation of its wireless in-ear headphones. The Amazon Echo Buds start pre-sale now at a discounted introductory price. The manufacturer promises high-quality audio architecture for clear, balanced sound, proprietary active noise reduction technology, advanced microphones for the best call quality, and hands-free access to Alexa.

Amazon Echo Buds Features

The 2nd generation Amazon Echo Buds rely on a compact and lightweight design to enable comfortable wearing over the long haul. A short sound port is said to increase comfort, while the built-in vent reduces pressure in the ear during use.

They are also IPX4 water- and dust-resistant, feature active noise cancellation (ANC), and can be operated via voice control with Alexa. ANC technology uses inner and outer microphones to estimate sound pressure at the eardrum, then reverse that signal to remove unwanted noise.

ANC is activated by a two-second press on either ear cup. Touch again to activate ambient mode, which amplifies voices and ambient noise. The amount of ambient noise can be conveniently adjusted via the Echo Buds settings in the Alexa app.

Audio quality and battery life

The Amazon Echo Buds 2nd Gen weigh in at just 5.7 grams per earbud. The sound is realized by powerful 5.7mm drivers in each earbud, which are said to realize clear and balanced acoustics with wide dynamic range.

Inside the Earbuds works a Realtek RTL8763C SoC including audio codec, NXP DSP and support for Bluetooth 5.0. In terms of battery life, up to five hours of music playback is realized when active noise reduction and hands-free access to Alexa are turned on.

The compact charging case allows two more charges for a total of up to 15 hours of music playback. When time is of the essence, up to two hours of music can be played with a 15-minute quick charge. The remaining battery power can also be queried at any time via the voice command “Alexa, how is the battery level?“.

If the Echo Buds are in the charging case, the LED lights in front of each earphone indicate the corresponding battery level. Echo Buds can be charged via USB-C or, if desired, via Qi-certified wireless charging pads.

Voice control with Alexa

Of course, the Amazon Echo Buds are deeply integrated into the ecosystem of the shipping giant, so an extensive voice control via Alexa cannot be missing. Alexa helps organize everyday life – whether at home or on the road. For example, reminders for regular stretching exercises can be created, the calendar can be checked, the opening hours of the nearest café can be called up, detergent can be added to the shopping list, or a phone call can be made.

The built-in microphones in each earbud also pick up low frequencies for improved call quality during phone conversations. In addition, the Earbuds can be searched for by voice command from another nearby Alexa-enabled device (“Alexa, where are my Echo Buds?”). Alternatively, the corresponding option can be selected in the Echo Buds settings in the Alexa app.
