AMD acquires Xilinx, largest purchase in company history

It is a somewhat different love story. Just in time for Valentine’s Day 2022, AMD’s takeover of chip manufacturer Xilinx got the green light. The antitrust authorities buried their objections and agreed to a takeover. The transaction represents the largest purchase in AMD’s corporate history.

AMD acquires Xilinx

Xilinx, the world’s largest designer of programmable logic chips – known as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is being fully acquired by AMD. The deal is now closed and is expected to be finalized on February 14, 2022.

Xilinx will then be fully owned by AMD, but will continue to operate as an independent company. AMD hopes to benefit from the know-how in the field of servers and data centers. Interestingly, both companies do not have their own manufacturing capacities and have their hardware manufactured to order.

Xilinx also has extensive expertise in the area of packaging. This is based on the coupling and stacking of different semiconductor components. This is an area in which AMD has also been actively researching recently.

The upcoming RDNA 3 chips could benefit noticeably from this, because according to current rumors, several GPUs are to be combined there, which could finally be realized with the help of the packaging expertise.

56 billion deal

Back in October 2020, AMD and Xilinx negotiated an agreement and agreed on a stock-based acquisition for the future. Each Xilinx share purchased was also given 1.7234 AMD securities, which extrapolates to $143 per Xilinx share, or $35 billion in total value.

In the meantime, however, both companies have been able to make strong gains on the stock market, so that Xilinx was last valued at 56 billion US dollars – an increase in share value of 57 percent to 224 US dollars. Xilinx was founded in 1984 by Ross Freeman (FPGA inventor), Bernie Vonderschmitt and Jim Barnett and has its headquarters in San José, USA.
