Android 17 Beta 1: Major updates for adaptive apps, performance and media are imminent

With Android 17 Beta 1, the next major update for Google’s operating system is in the starting blocks. Although the first beta version was not released as originally planned, the rollout for Pixel smartphones from the Pixel 6 onwards is set to begin shortly. The focus is clearly on improvements for developers, optimized performance and modern media features – with a noticeable impact on foldables, tablets and high-performance devices.

  • Mandatory adaptive app width for foldables and tablets
  • Support for the new h.266 video codec with better compression
  • Optimized camera APIs for smoother third-party apps
  • Synchronized volume and simplified device permissions

Android 17 Beta 1 brings adaptive apps without black bars

A central theme of Android 17 Beta 1 is the consistent support of adaptive apps. In future, applications will have to implement dynamic width adjustment in order to correctly utilize the entire screen area of foldables and tablets. This is Google’s response to a known problem: apps that only run in smartphone format on devices such as a Pixel Fold or tablet and display black bars on the left and right.

The new requirement places more responsibility on developers to make their applications responsive. For users of modern devices, this means significantly better use of space and a more consistent UI experience. This change should be particularly noticeable in multitasking scenarios and large displays.

A lot is also happening under the hood. Google is revising the camera APIs so that third-party apps will be able to switch between different modes in future without having to reinitialize the entire camera session. This reduces loading times, minimizes potential glitches and improves overall performance – an advantage for photo and video apps as well as for social media platforms.

More Information

The beta version is available for all Pixel smartphones from the Pixel 6 up to the current Pixel 10 series, including A, Pro and Fold models. The final version of Android 17 is currently planned for the second quarter of 2026, with a major feature update to follow in the fourth quarter. The schedule is therefore based on the previous year’s cycle.

More performance and modern media features with Android 17 Beta 1

In addition to UI and API adjustments, Android 17 Beta 1 also expands the media functions. Support for the h.266 codec (VVC – Versatile Video Coding) is particularly relevant. This is intended to compress videos more efficiently than h.265 and thus enable either higher quality with the same file size or smaller files with comparable quality. This is a strategically important step for streaming, cloud gaming and mobile content production.

Another practical innovation relates to volume control: Android 17 can synchronize audio levels between different apps. This means that videos can be played at a comparable volume level regardless of the platform – for streaming or social media apps, for example. This reduces abrupt volume jumps when switching apps.

Google is also simplifying the setup for wearables and health devices. A new bundled authorization query allows several necessary approvals to be granted in just one step. This speeds up the setup of fitness trackers and medical devices and reduces fragmentation in security-related requests.

These features are complemented by numerous smaller performance optimizations in the system core, which are aimed at stability and efficiency. This could have a particularly positive impact on gaming, multitasking and AI-supported applications.

Conclusion

Android 17 Beta 1 sets clear priorities: better support for large displays, optimized APIs and modern media technologies. While end users benefit above all from adaptive apps and consistent audio playback, developers receive important tools for a smooth launch of the final version. The beta will be released shortly for Pixel devices from Pixel 6 onwards. The final version is expected between April and June 2026 and will be distributed free of charge as an OTA update as usual.
