Apple has reported that its App Store has generated a total of $260 billion in revenue since it began in 2008.
Growing services business
The figures presented highlight, above all, the importance of the services business for the U.S. company: Apple is increasingly relying on services to produce profits; the sale of end devices is no longer the company’s only profitable mainstay. Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Services, made it clear that Apple today sees its task primarily as enabling entertainment, information and communication. Against this background, the fact that there are 745 million paid subscriptions to Apple services can be seen as a sign of success.
Equally to be classified is the publicized turnover of third-party companies represented in the App Store. Here, Apple provides the platform and thus brings companies and customers together.
