Apple is expanding its headphone portfolio and presenting the next generation of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2. The new model retains the familiar design, but comes with numerous technical improvements. In particular, the focus is on significantly stronger active noise cancellation, new intelligent functions and an improved sound experience. This is primarily made possible by the new H2 chip, which is already known from other AirPods models and is now being used for the first time in Apple’s over-ear series.

  • New H2 chip with up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation
  • Lossless audio (24-bit / 48 kHz) via USB-C cable
  • Functions such as adaptive audio, conversation detection and live translation
  • New colors and pre-order from March 25, price from 579 euros

AirPods Max 2 focus on better sound and stronger noise suppression

With the Apple AirPods Max 2, Apple is pursuing the goal of further expanding the existing premium headphone concept. Visually, the over-ear headphones remain true to the familiar design of the first generation, but technical improvements have been made in several areas.

At the heart of the new generation is the H2 chip, which is responsible for numerous audio improvements. In combination with new algorithms for so-called computational audio, active noise canceling (ANC) is said to work up to 1.5 times more effectively than its predecessor, according to Apple. Constant background noise in particular, such as aircraft engines or train noise, should be significantly reduced as a result.

The transparency mode has also been revised. A new microphone setup and optimized signal processing should ensure that ambient noise is reproduced more naturally. This makes it possible to hear conversations or important noises without having to take off the headphones.

In addition to noise suppression, the sound has also been further improved. Apple has integrated a new high-dynamic range amplifier, which is intended to ensure more precise playback. According to the manufacturer, instrument separation, bass control and the naturalness of mids and highs are the main beneficiaries. This is complemented by Personalized 3D Audio with Head Tracking, which can create a more spatial sound image.

For particularly high audio quality, the AirPods Max 2 also support lossless audio with 24 bit and 48 kHz when connected via USB-C cable. This also makes them more interesting for creative applications such as music production or audio editing.

Apple AirPods Max 2 bring new smart functions and creator features

In addition to sound and noise cancellation, Apple has added several smart functions to the AirPods Max 2. These are also based on the H2 chip and Apple’s machine learning technologies.

One of the key innovations is Adaptive Audio. The system automatically adjusts the intensity of the noise suppression and transparency mode to the environment. In quiet situations, the focus remains more on playback, while in busy environments, more outside noise is allowed through.

With conversation detection, the headphones also react automatically to conversations. As soon as someone speaks, the music volume is reduced and surrounding voices are emphasized.

Another new feature is Live Translation, which is designed to overcome language barriers with the help of Apple Intelligence. Conversations can be translated in real time – a function that should be particularly interesting when traveling or at international meetings.

Apple is also integrating new options for content creators. Photos or video recordings can be started via the camera remote control by simply pressing the Digital Crown on the headphones. This works with the iPhone’s camera app or compatible apps.

Other functions include:

  • Voice isolation for clearer phone calls
  • Personalized volume that adapts to listening habits
  • Protection against loud noises to relieve hearing strain

In addition to the technical innovations, sustainability also plays a role. According to Apple, the AirPods Max 2 use 100 percent recycled rare earth metals in the magnets and recycled materials in several components and the packaging.

Conclusion

The Apple AirPods Max 2 build on the concept of the first generation, but bring with them numerous technical improvements. The new H2 chip in particular provides stronger ANC, more intelligent functions and better audio quality. With lossless audio, Creator features and advanced AI functions, Apple continues to position the headphones in the premium segment. Pre-order starts on March 25, with delivery beginning in early April. The price is 579 euros.
