Apple iPad mini 8: OLED, waterproof and with A20 Pro chip as a top upgrade

Rumors about the next iPad mini point to the biggest update in a long time: an OLED display, waterproof design and a more powerful chip than expected. Instead of the assumed A19 Pro, the A20 Pro from the iPhone 18 Pro could be installed, making the compact tablet a real powerhouse in 2026.

  • OLED display of 8.5 inches instead of the current IPS panel for better contrast.
  • Waterproof housing without speaker openings thanks to vibration technology.
  • A20 Pro chip (2 nm process) instead of A19 Pro for higher performance and efficiency.
  • Market launch expected in the second half of 2026.

New design with water protection and OLED screen

The iPad mini 8 is set to receive a completely redesigned casing that does away with visible speaker openings. Instead, Apple is using a vibration technology in which the screen or the housing generates sound – an approach that makes the tablet waterproof for the first time. This makes it suitable for use by the pool, in the bathtub or in the rain without any liquid getting in. This design upgrade addresses a long-standing weakness of compact tablets and clearly sets the iPad mini apart from competitor models.

The display grows from 8.3 to 8.5 inches and switches to OLED technology (LTPS-OLED) with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Despite the lack of ProMotion (120 Hz), OLED promises deeper blacks, higher brightness and a better contrast ratio compared to the current Liquid Retina IPS panel. Rumors from an accidentally published macOS kernel debug kit confirm these plans, supplemented by analyses of leaks on Weibo and MacRumors. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman sees a possible unveiling as early as 2026, which makes the timing of the current model (October 2024, A17 Pro) plausible.

More powerful A20 Pro chip than expected

The biggest surprise comes from internal Apple codenames: Instead of the A19 Pro (from iPhone 17 Pro), everything points to the A20 Pro, the same chip as in the iPhone 18 Pro. This is manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2 nm process and offers up to 15 percent more performance and 30 percent higher efficiency compared to the 3 nm A19. Earlier leaks spoke of the A19 Pro, but the kernel code (e.g. J510/J511) and confirmations from leakers such as “Kang” contradict this – an upgrade that elevates the iPad mini to the same processor generation as Apple’s flagship smartphones.

This chip change seems plausible, as Apple often equips iPads with top CPUs, such as the A15 Bionic 2021 across the iPhone and iPad line. The A20 Pro would noticeably accelerate gaming, AR applications and Apple Intelligence, with a compact design and longer battery life. Analysts are not ruling out the possibility of Apple testing variants and sticking with the A19 Pro for cost reasons, but the convergence of sources (MacRumors, Weibo leaks) strengthens the A20 Pro probability.

Conclusion

The iPad mini 8 promises a comprehensive upgrade in 2026: OLED for a brilliant picture, water protection for more robustness and potentially the A20 Pro for high-end performance in pocket size. Rumors from reliable sources such as MacRumors and kernel codes make the plans plausible, even if final details remain open. Prices are likely to be around 500 euros like its predecessor; the wait is worth it for fans of compact power.
