Apple presents iPhone 13, 13 Pro and 13 Mini

Apple has announced the new iPhone models in the recently announced livestream from Cupertino. This year, there will again be four different versions of the popular smartphone from Silicon Valley. The iPhone 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, as well as the small iPhone 13 Mini. Available are the new iPhones from September 24.

Externally, not much has changed since last year in terms of design. The aluminum frame still has clear edges and not much has happened on the back either. Only the arrangement of the two camera lenses has changed – they are now arranged diagonally. On the front, the notch has been reduced by 20% to free up more screen space. In addition, the brightness of the 6.1-inch OLED screen has been increased by 28%. An IP68 rating has also been given to the iPhone 13. Available colors for the iPhone 13 include rose, blue, midnight, polar star and (PRODUCT)RED.

Inside, we now find the new A15 Bionic chip, which is based on the 5 nanometer architecture and includes a 6-core CPU, as well as 4-core GPU. In addition, there is an improved neural engine for machine learning and a new “Image Signal Processor”, which is responsible for image processing. The smallest storage version has been increased to 128 GB and the battery has also been increased compared to the iPhone 12, which is supposed to offer 2.5 hours longer battery life.

The new “Cinematic Mode”

The camera has also been improved in several ways. For one, the main camera’s new sensor is larger than in its predecessor and can boast a pixel size of 1.7 µm. In addition, there is Sensor Shift OIS, which performs image stabilization directly on the sensor. As a big new feature, Apple introduced the “Cinematic Mode” for video. Supported by Machine Learning, Cinematic Mode allows seamless switching of camera focus between people and objects in the frame, giving footage a cinematic look.

The cheapest variant of the iPhone 13 with 128GB storage is available starting at €899.

iPhone 13 Mini

The new iPhone 13 Mini actually differs from the iPhone 13 only in the size of the device. The same color options are also available. At 5.4 inches, it is just under 2 centimeters smaller in diagonal than the standard size. Apple has stated the battery life to be 1.5 hours longer than the previous iPhone Mini.

The iPhone 13 Mini will be available starting at €799.

iPhone 13 Pro (Max)

The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are also each getting a successor – the iPhone 13 Pro at 6.1 inches and the iPhone 13 Pro Max at 6.7 inches. These are available in the colors sierra blue, silver, gold and graphite. In addition to the general innovations of the iPhone 13, the display and camera have seen the most changes here.

The new iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are the first iPhones to feature a screen that supports a refresh rate of more than 60 Hz. Apple calls this variable refresh rate, which is also already known from the iPad Pro, “ProMotion”. Thus, refresh rates between 10 and 120 Hz are possible in the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. In addition, the display now reaches a maximum brightness of 1000 nits.

The camera module on the back is made up of a 77 mm telephoto, f1.8 Ultrawide and the main camera this year. All three cameras now have the option to use Night Mode. On the software side, Apple has added the so-called “Photographic Styles”. These are different settings that influence the image processing and are supposed to make it possible to give the photos their own style. Possible styles include “Rich Contrast” or “Vibrant”. In addition, there is further support for ProRes video.

For the real heavy users, there should now also be a variant of the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro with 1 TB of storage. As with the other iPhones, the battery life of these two variants has been improved compared to their predecessors – the Pro with 1.5 hours longer runtime and the Pro Max with 2.5 hours.

The Pro models are available starting at €1149 for the iPhone 13 Pro and €1249 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Environment

Apple has announced that even further attention has been paid to protecting the environment in the manufacture of the new iPhones. The plastic for the antenna strips is said to be made from recycled plastic, and the rare earths for the MagSafe functionality that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 are also said to be recycled. In addition, the plastic cover around the packaging is now missing, which should prevent further plastic waste.
