Apple Studio Display unveiled: 5K resolution, six speakers, and A13 Bionic

The manufacturer also launches a new display that matches the high-end Mac Studio PC, which was presented at the Apple event. The Apple Studio Display features a 5K resolution and is equipped with an A13 Bionic chip.

Apple Studio Display: All info on the new monitor

Price-wise, the new Apple Studio Display positions itself well below the manufacturer’s Pro Display XDR. The monitor with Retina display comes with a screen diagonal of 27 inches (68.29 cm) and realizes a 5K resolution with 5,120 x 2,880 pixels at a pixel density of 218 PPI on it. According to the manufacturer, the DCI-P3 color space is covered by 100%.

The maximum brightness is 600 nits, while TrueTone is supposed to ensure accurate color reproduction. Just like the MacBook Pro, the Studio Display uses an anti-reflective coating that is supposed to additionally protect against reflections in direct light. Optionally, the display can also be configured with a nanotextured glass coating, which should virtually eliminate reflections.

Connections and ergonomics

The monitor connects to PCs, Macs and other devices via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), allowing MacBooks to charge simultaneously at up to 96 watts. In addition, three other USB Type-C ports are available, offering 10 Gbps speeds.

Features of the Apple Studio Display include a tiltable stand that allows for adjustment from -5° to +25°. A height-adjustable stand is also offered as an option, which also allows adjusting the height up to a maximum of 105 mm. A VESA mount adapter is also optionally available. Together with the stand, the Studio Display is 62.3 cm wide, 47.8 cm high and 16.8 cm deep. The weight is 6.3 kg.

Apple A13 Bionic with two functions

The Apple A13 Bionic, the ARM chip that we already know from the iPhone 11, is at work inside the Apple Studio Display. In particular, it has two functions. On the one hand, it processes videos and photos from the integrated webcam (12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 122° field of view, f/2.4 aperture, including follow mode).

On the other hand, it is responsible for the data processing of the installed microphones. Three microphones enable the display to be compatible with Apple’s voice assistant Siri, while six built-in speakers are responsible for audio output. They also support Apple’s virtual surround sound called Spatial Audio and are composed of four woofers for rich, differentiated bass and minimal distortion, as well as two high-performance tweeters for precise mids and brilliant highs.

The Apple Studio Display is available for pre-order now from Apple’s website and is scheduled to begin shipping on March 18. The price starts at 1,749 Euros for the standard model, and 2,459.00 Euros for the top features including nanotextured glass and a height-adjustable stand.
