Apple TV: Older models will soon no longer be able to access YouTube

If you own an old Apple TV, you might soon have to think about buying a current model. At least if you like watching YouTube videos. The reason for this is that the video portal’s app will no longer offer support for older models starting in March. Video playback will still be possible then, but you will have to accept complicated detours.

Second and third generation affected

In particular, the Apple TVs of the second (2010) and third generation (2012) should soon lose access to YouTube. This follows from a report by Apple experts at 9to5Mac. Some users are already reporting that when they open the app from Google’s video portal, they receive a message to that effect. But as part of the announcement, the app also reveals a possible solution. Playback should still be possible on older models if the video is transferred to the Apple TV via AirPlay. Here, an iPhone or iPad is used as a “transmitter”, for example.

New models not affected

Currently, Apple offers two Apple TVs for sale. Namely, these are the Apple TV HD and the Apple TV 4K. Due to their timeliness, these are not affected by the imminent discontinuation of the app. An external difference between the new Apple TVs and the old model can not be determined too easily.

The two current Apple TVs rely on the special Siri remote (Here: Apple TV 4K)

If you are now worried that you are one of the owners of one of the affected models, a look at the remote control is enough. For example, Apple relies on the Siri remote with integrated microphone for the two current versions.

New model on the way?

According to several rumors, Apple is planning to release a new model of its Apple TVs in the coming months. This should even be able to offer performance for gaming applications thanks to a significant increase in power. We are curious.
