Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro and 6 officially unveiled: Gaming smartphones with 165 Hz AMOLED display.

The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro and Asus ROG Phone 6 have finally been officially unveiled after leaks about the new gaming smartphones have been floating around the Internet for about a week now.

The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro with up to 18 GB LPDDR5 RAM

The good news is that the two gaming smartphones, Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro and 6, share most of their specifications and are both excellently equipped. For example, the new high-end SoC from Qualcomm, namely the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with a clock rate of up to 3.2 Ghz and an Adreno 730 GPU, ensures that.

However, there are differences in the working memory. While the Pro model relies on 18 GB LPDDR5 RAM, the normal ROG Phone 6 uses “only” 16 GB of the same working memory. Asus combines this with 512 GB of fast UFS 3.1 flash memory in both models, which cannot be expanded.

There are also no differences in the display. Both gaming smartphones feature a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 165 Hz and a resolution of 2448 x 1080 pixels and thus 395 PPI. The displays feature HDR10+ certification, a 720 Hz touch sampling rate, and get up to 1,200 nits of brightness – typical brightness: 800 nits.

They are also protected against scratches with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and also offer extra high color burst coverage. Both DCI-P3 and sRGB are covered well over 100 percent.

Battery and gaming features

Asus’ ROG Phone 6 Pro and 6 have a total battery capacity of 6,000 mAh, whereby the battery is also divided into two 3,000 mAh modules in this case. Charging is done with a maximum of 65 watts via USB Type-C and even during gaming, if desired, thanks to the side port.

Both smartphones are 173 mm x 77 mm x 10.3 mm (height x width x depth) and weigh a whopping 239 grams. They also support Bluetooth 5.2 including high-resolution audio codecs LDAC and aptX HD.

They also have a 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones. However, audio playback is also done via the two stereo speakers with Cirrus Logic CS35L45 amplifiers. In total, the GameFX audio system of the ROG Phone 6 series comes with balanced dual speakers with seven magnets. Wi-Fi 6E, NFC and a dual-SIM slot are also included.

The passive cooling in particular has been improved in Asus’ ROG Phone 6 Pro and 6, which can be further improved with the new AeroActive Cooler 6 clip-on fan. It features four buttons that offer real added value in gaming. The smartphone also becomes a real gaming console with the Asus ROG Kunai 3 Gamepad.

Second difference between the smartphones: while the Asus ROG Phone 6 is adorned with an RGB-lit manufacturer logo on the back, the ROG Phone 6 Pro comes up with a small, colorful ROG Vision PMOLED secondary display.

The cameras of the Asus ROG Phone 6 series

Asus hasn’t skimped on the cameras either. Let’s hope so, anyway, because these specs don’t go particularly deep into detail. The 50-megapixel main camera relies on the Sony IMX766 sensor, while a 13-MP ultra-wide-angle camera is also added. The third camera is a small macro camera. The front camera with Sony IMX663 sensor has a resolution of 12 megapixels.

At least: offered are 8K videos with up to 24 fps or 4K recordings with up to 60 FPS with the main camera, which should look good thanks to 3-axis image stabilization. Time Lapse recordings in 4K are also possible, as are slow motion videos with a maximum of 4K resolution and 120 FPS or 1080p with up to 240 FPS.

Prices and Availability

Both Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro and 6 gaming smartphones are available for pre-order now and are scheduled to ship in August 2022. The regular ROG Phone 6 comes in Phantom Black and Storm White colors and is priced at a suggested retail price of 999 euros with 12 GB of RAM, as well as 256 GB of ROM. The model with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB system memory, on the other hand, is priced at 1,149 Euros.

The ROG Phone 6 Pro, on the other hand, only comes in Storm White and is only offered with 18 GB of RAM and 512 GB of system storage. The RRP here is 1,299 Euros (~$1,813). Pre-orders are still scheduled to start on July 05 in the Asus online shop.

The new AeroActive Cooler 6 will cost 89.99 Euros. The ROG Kunai 3 gamepad is available in white and black for 119.99 Euros each.
