Asus VivoWatch 5 Aero: Health smartwatch enables fingertip ECG

As part of IFA 2022, Asus presented the VivoWatch 5 Aero in Berlin, which is primarily advertised with its ECG function and marketed accordingly as a health smartwatch. Blood oxygen levels and pulse can also be measured.

Sensor to provide information about health

The VivoWatch 5 Aero differs significantly from its predecessor model, the VivoWatch 5. While the latter model is more of a classic smartwatch, the new Aero version sees itself more as a kind of luxury fitness tracker. You can see that: The display is kept comparatively small, which is due to the fact that there is room for a PPG and ECG sensor underneath it. If a finger is placed on the sensor, the pulse and blood oxygen content can be measured. In addition, the watch can be used to derive an ECG. The results are supposed to be particularly accurate thanks to another sensor on the back of the smartwatch. However, Asus has not yet revealed why the second sensor is on the back and what advantages the use of two sensors in exactly this position offers.

The smartwatch is also equipped with a sleep tracking function and a GPS module. Asus has so far held back with statements about the device’s other features. Only the facts that the smartwatch can be used as a remote control for the camera of a connected smartphone and is able to display incoming notifications on it are known.

Misleading advertising

What’s more, it’s obvious that Asus has been running its mouth a bit too full in marketing. Thus, the statement that it is the world’s first smartwatch with fingertip ECG is simply false. Exactly this function is already offered by the Apple Watch Series 7, where the sensor is hidden differently than in the watch now presented by Asus.

Price and availability

The new smartwatch is expected to hit the market in this country in December. There is no information about the price yet.
