Audi builds new factory for electric cars in northern China

Audi has added a new major project in China to its agenda. More precisely, the joint venture called “Audi FAW NEV Company” is planning to build a new factory for electric cars. The appropriate foundation stone in Changchun, northern China, has now been laid.

Audi continues to believe in China

“Without doing business with China, inflation would explode even further” said VW CEO Herbert Diess just recently during an interview with the Spiegel. Therefore, VW will not stop working with the Middle Kingdom and economic giants without further ado. This becomes clear, among other things, in the actions of VW subsidiary Audi. In 2021, the Ingolstadt-based company decided to set up a joint venture with FAW, an entrepreneurial partner from China. The purpose behind it? Audi wants to build a huge factory capable of producing up to 150,000 electric cars a year.

The first vehicles are expected to roll off the assembly lines of the factory, construction of which has now begun, as early as 2024. Audi itself is not only promising large-scale production. It is also expected to meet the latest standards in terms of connectivity and, on top of that, to be ecological. The traditional Ingolstadt company is pursuing the latter goal loosely in line with its latest “Mission Zero” program. As the name suggests, the focus here is on environmentally friendly production and the efficient use of important resources.

Factory site with 20 buildings

The Gigafactory in Grünheide, which is currently considered a money-burning furnace from Tesla’s point of view, has made it clear just how big car factories are in the age of electric mobility. Audi doesn’t seem to want to do things by halves when it comes to its new plant in China, either. As early as the end of this year, there are to be 20 buildings on the site, which covers a total of 150 hectares. The carmaker is not the only one to benefit from this.

For example, the company is talking about creating 3000 new jobs as part of the construction. When the plant is completed in 2024, three different models are to roll off the production lines. Not only the Q6 e-tron e-SUV is to be part of the lineup. The long-awaited A6 e-tron, for which Audi showed a few exciting concept images a few weeks ago, is also expected to roll off the factory line on site.

A factory of the future?

Audi seems to be particularly proud of the modern standards it wants to rely on in production. In particular, the topic of “networking” is expected to play a major role. For example, the automaker talks about all the different departments being networked thanks to a special IT system. It is not only after completion that the Ingolstadt-based company wants to rely on state-of-the-art standards. Even during the construction of the factory, a number of digital aids will be used that will allow even employees in Bavaria to follow the construction process step by step. In particular, the most modern methods of three-dimensional scanning will be used.
