Audi: The next A3 will only be available in all-electric form

Audi’s e-tron series clearly shows that the VW Group can not only convince with ID.3, ID.4 and soon also ID.5 on the electric car market. The all-electric cars from the group’s sister company are quite impressive and enjoy a very good reputation, at least among high earners. But now a true classic of the Audi family is also to become fully electric – the Audi A3.

Combustion engines were yesterday

It’s amazing how quickly the triumphant march of electromobility is progressing among carmakers. While a few months ago it was still exceptional models that enjoyed the benefits of a pure electric motor, now even genuine classics are being equipped with electric drives. This will soon be the case with the iconic Audi A3. The compact car the size of a VW Golf is even expected to herald a new era at Audi. After all, it is the first regular vehicle to be available only with an electric motor. Neither a Verbenner nor a plug-in hybrid model is to be launched in the next generation.

This is based on a report in “Auto, Motor und Sport”. According to the auto experts, the switch to electric-only drive will also mean that the Audi A3’s platform will be completely redesigned. With the help of the so-called Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), VW wants to standardize the production of its electric cars. However, you will have to be patient until you can put the all-electric A3 in your garage at home. After all, the compact car is not scheduled to go on sale until 2027.

“Vorsprung 2030”

Knowing that the next generation Audi A3 is coming in 2027, you would have only had to put one and one together to know that this one will be all-electric. Why? It wasn’t until 2021 that Markus Duesmann, himself the head of Audi, announced his plan for the future. The roadmap goes by the name of “Vorsprung 2030” and aims, among other things, to have only purely electric Audis on the market from 2026. The last internal combustion Audis are then to roll off the production line in 2033.

Strictly speaking, the Audi A3 due to be launched in 2027 will not be the first electric Audi. At present, the compact car can already be driven at least partially electrically. After all, Audi offers its popular car as a plug-in hybrid. However, in view of the known disadvantages of the combination of combustion engine and electric motor, it will be more than exciting to experience the A3 e-tron on the road. We are curious when Audi will reveal the first pictures.
