Autonomous cabs: Amazon subsidiary Zoox launches first test drives on public roads

In the USA, autonomous cars are no longer a rarity. Autonomous cabs have also been around for some time, although they can easily paralyze an intersection at night. Now Amazon subsidiary Zoox is also launching the first test drives of autonomous robot cabs on public roads, without any steering wheel, driver or pedals at all.

Zoox: Autonomous cabs launch test run

World premiere at Amazon subsidiary Zoox. That’s because, compared to other autonomous cabs, the company’s models are so-called robot cabs that come without a driver, steering wheel or pedals.

Last weekend, the company completed its first test drives on public roads and California, according to its own press release. After all, the company’s limited permit only allows it to drive on public roads on Saturdays and Sundays. At least currently still.

During the test drive last Saturday, a lap around the company’s headquarters in Foster City, which is just under 3.2 kilometers long, was successfully driven, according to the company.

In doing so, the current prototype already meets all safety guidelines to safely navigate public roads. The robot cab automatically recognizes and reacts to pedestrians, other cars, traffic lights, traffic signs and much more.
