With HEADPHONE LAB, beyerdynamic is expanding its professional studio portfolio with a purely software-based solution for precise mixing and mastering via headphones. Presented at NAMM 2026, the new DAW plug-in is aimed at producers who need to make reliable mixing decisions even without an acoustically optimized room. The combination of headphone calibration and realistic studio simulation promises reference quality regardless of the working environment and underlines the growing importance of hybrid hardware-software concepts in the audio sector.
- Free DAW plug-in for mixing and mastering via headphones
- Scientifically developed studio sound profile with precise calibration
- Realistic speaker and room imaging instead of “in your head” sound
- Compatible with current beyerdynamic studio headphones
HEADPHONE LAB as a virtual reference studio for modern producing
With HEADPHONE LAB, beyerdynamic is responding to a reality that has long been part of everyday life for many professional audio productions. Work is increasingly being done in home studios, rented apartments or on the road, often without the possibility of setting up an acoustically optimized control room with high-quality monitors. At the same time, the requirements for translatability, neutrality and precision remain as high as ever. This is precisely where the new plug-in comes in, adding a virtual reference studio to proven beyerdynamic studio headphones.
The core of the concept is the tonal optimization to a neutral studio sound profile. The characteristic sound signature of the respective headphone models is retained, but is specifically transformed into a balance that is suitable for mixing and mastering. The basis for this is years of research and development work as well as collaboration with professional recording studios. The goal is a sound image that makes decisions reliable – regardless of room acoustics or additional hardware.
HEADPHONE LAB combines this calibration with a realistic studio simulation. Instead of a typical headphone sound localized in the head, a natural loudspeaker image with stable spatial orientation is created. The software is therefore not positioned as a replacement for high-quality studio monitors, but as a practical alternative for situations in which classic setups are not feasible. The result is a tool that combines professional requirements with modern working methods.
Precise calibration, flexible adjustment and broad compatibility
A key distinguishing feature of HEADPHONE LAB is the two-stage calibration approach. STANDARD CALIBRATION is aimed at all current DT studio headphones from beyerdynamic and is based on an acoustically measured reference specimen, a so-called “golden sample”. FACTORY CALIBRATION is also available for maximum precision. Here, the sound profile is adjusted directly to the individual production measurement data of the respective headphones, which compensates for deviations typical of the material and production process. This close collaboration between hardware and software is exceptional in the industry.
FACTORY CALIBRATION currently supports the DT 700 PRO X, DT 900 PRO X, DT 1770 PRO MK II and DT 1990 PRO MK II models. The calibration is supplemented by extensive customization options that further refine virtual monitoring. These include individually adjustable ear distance, head circumference and virtual speaker angles of 40°, 60° or 80°. An optional room simulation also ensures a constant reference environment, even with changing work locations.
Technically, HEADPHONE LAB is practical: the plug-in is available for Windows and macOS and supports the VST3, AU and AAX formats. This means it can be easily integrated into common digital audio workstations. The software will be demonstrated live at the beyerdynamic stand at NAMM 2026 from January 22 to 24 and presented in combination with the entire professional product portfolio.
