BitMart: 180 million euros stolen

Cryptocurrencies worth around 180 million euros were stolen from the crypto exchange BitMart. Unlike previous incidents, this was not based on a hack. Rather, the attackers had the keys needed to access the reserves.

Various cryptocurrencies stolen

The cryptocurrencies were worth around 180 million euros at the time of the theft. Among the stolen coins are mainly Ethereum and Binance coins. In addition, numerous so-called meme coins were affected, such as Shiba Inu and Dogelon Mars.

The money was stolen from the crypto exchange’s hot wallets. These are wallets that contain the money needed for day-to-day business. In addition to these hot wallets, which are constantly accessed to process transactions, crypto exchanges usually have cold storages where the larger reserves are stored. It is not yet known how the attackers were able to obtain the keys needed for access.

Major portion already resold

The other transactions are traceable in the blockchain. Therefore, it is known that a large part of the loot has already been resold – and significantly below the market value, which has already fallen noticeably since the theft. The loot was turned over on decentralized trading venues. In addition, the coins were deposited on an anonymization platform and then transferred to an unknown address. Where exactly the money ended up is therefore not traceable. Around 36 million euros are still on traceable wallets.

Attack initially denied

What is explosive in all this is that BitMart initially denied the attack after the security firm PeckShield drew attention to it. However, BitMart has since publicly confirmed the theft.
