BYD Smartwatch: Manufacturer presents wearable as car key

Manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) from China took off last year and presented the Yangwang U8 and U9 at CESS 2023 in January. Now they’ve got something completely different in tow: the BYD smartwatch is expected to not only function as a car key, but also bring everything else you’d expect from a smart wearable.

The BYD smartwatch in detail

As the website TechGoing reports, the BYD smartwatch is intended to completely replace the car key of its own e-cars. Visually, the wearable is reminiscent of quite normal smartwatches such as the Amazfit GTR 4 (our review), but the bezel features a lock symbol on the right side, which can be used to unlock or lock the manufacturer’s cars.

Thus, an app for this does not even have to be opened. However, the trunk, windows and more can then be opened here, for example, or other functions of the vehicles can be used.

Otherwise, the BYD smartwatch offers everything you would expect from a wearable of this type. Various sports and fitness modes are to be offered, according to the feature sheet, as well as GPS, an alarm function, notifications, sleep tracking and much more.

The watch relies on a sapphire glass display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels and supports Android (from version 4.4), as well as iOS (from version 7.1). A heartbeat sensor is also offered, as well as a waterproof case that is suitable for swimming.

The 200 mAh strong battery should be able to hold out in standby mode for up to 30 days, and in normal use for 5 to 7 days after all.

Unlocking via NFC is coming

In addition to unlocking via BYD smartwatch, the manufacturer is also working on a way to unlock the cars via NFC via iPhone or Apple Watch and, at least according to the manufacturer, with a particularly secure connection.

The NFC feature is to make its debut in the upcoming BYD Frigate 07 model. When and if the BYD smartwatch will even come to Germany is currently still unclear. BYD is already on the German market with the HAN, TANG and ATO 3 models, and the Seal is supposed to follow in 2023.
