BYD Song Ultra EV: Electric SUV with 710 km range from 19,000 euros

The BYD Song Ultra EV is currently causing quite a stir on the electric car market. With the new electric SUV, Chinese manufacturer BYD has presented a vehicle that impresses above all with its extremely low entry-level price and revolutionary fast-charging technology. In just 20 days after the pre-sales launch, over 21,500 orders have already been recorded – a strong signal of the enormous demand.

BYD Song Ultra EV starts at the equivalent of 19,000 euros

BYD officially launched the Song Ultra EV in China on March 26, 2026. The starting price is 151,900 yuan, which is equivalent to around 19,000 euros. The most expensive of the four available equipment lines costs 179,900 yuan (approx. 22,500 euros). This positions the electric SUV well below the originally expected pre-sale price of around 30,000 euros and noticeably undercuts many competitors in this segment.

The drive is provided by a single electric motor on the rear axle. Depending on the variant, the motor produces 240 kW (322 hp) or 270 kW (362 hp). The top speed is 210 km/h. BYD therefore relies on rear-wheel drive for the Song Ultra EV, which should ensure better traction when accelerating.

Blade Battery 2.0 and a range of up to 710 km

At the heart of the Song Ultra EV is the new Blade Battery 2.0 – the second generation of BYD’s well-known lithium iron phosphate battery technology. The energy density has been increased by 12 percent compared to the previous version. There is a choice of two battery sizes: 68.4 kWh with a CLTC range of up to 605 km and 82.7 kWh with up to 710 km. As is usual with BYD models, however, the everyday range according to European WLTP standards is likely to be somewhat lower.

Flash charging: From 10 to 70 percent in 5 minutes

Probably the most impressive feature of the Song Ultra EV is the new flash charging technology. According to BYD, the battery can be charged from 10 to 70 percent in just five minutes. It should only take nine minutes to charge from 10 to 97 percent. Even in extremely cold temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius, the charging time is only extended by around three minutes. The maximum charging power is up to 1,500 kW. If these values are confirmed in practice, charging would hardly take longer than a conventional refueling stop – an enormous advantage over many current electric vehicles, which often require 20 to 30 minutes for a comparable charging process.

Lush equipment for an affordable e-car

BYD also wants to prove in the interior that cheap does not necessarily mean spartan. The interior is dominated by a 15.6-inch central display, supplemented by a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 26-inch head-up display. The infotainment system runs on BYD’s in-house UI 7.0 and supports four-zone voice control. Depending on the equipment line, there are heated, ventilated and even massaging seats. The driver’s seat is eight-way electrically adjustable, and the front seats can be folded down together with the rear bench to form an almost flat lying surface of around 1.80 meters.

If you book the “God’s Eye B” option, you will receive a LiDAR-based assistance system with 27 sensors and a computing power of 254 TOPS. This supports semi-autonomous driving on highways and in the city as well as automatic parking. According to initial sales data, around 45 percent of buyers opt for this additional package.

Competition and market launch in Europe

In China, the Song Ultra EV is positioning itself as a direct competitor to models such as the Tesla Model Y, the Xpeng G6, the Leapmotor C11 and the Deepal S7. Interestingly, according to industry reports, BYD’s own Sealion 06 EV is also becoming an internal rival to the Song Ultra EV – around 50 percent of prospective buyers compare the two models.

Whether and when the BYD Song Ultra EV will come to Europe remains to be seen. BYD usually launches new models on the market in China first and then considers expansion. In Europe, a market launch could be expected in one to two years at the earliest – presumably at a higher price due to import duties and taxes. However, the company has already announced plans to expand the flash charging network to international markets by the end of 2026.

BYD is no longer a stranger to the European market. In recent years, the Chinese manufacturer has also attracted attention at the upper end of the price scale with models such as the BYD Yangwang U9.

Conclusion: BYD Song Ultra EV sets new standards in terms of value for money

With the BYD Song Ultra EV, the Chinese manufacturer impressively demonstrates where the journey can take electric SUVs. An entry-level price of around 19,000 euros, a range of up to 710 kilometers and charging times of just five minutes – that sounds almost too good to be true. Of course, the flash charging technology first has to prove itself in practice, and the CLTC ranges are likely to be somewhat lower in Europe. Nevertheless, if BYD brings the Song Ultra EV to Europe at a competitive price, it should really shake up the market. For now, all that remains for European buyers is to wait and see.
