Canon EOS R50 launches as vlogging camera for content creation

In addition to the full-frame professional camera EOS R8, Canon has introduced a second new product. The compact Canon EOS R50 relies on an APS-C sensor and is intended to be the entry-level EOS R series for content creators.

The new Canon EOS R50 in detail

With the Canon EOS R50 vlogging camera, the manufacturer wants to take on the renowned competition that has been dedicated to content creators for quite some time. Accordingly, the Sony ZV-1F or Nikon Z 30 are likely to mark the new camera’s main competitors.

“The EOS R50 is suitable for all aspiring creatives who are looking for a camera to refine their style in both photos and videos,” promises the manufacturer. At the same time, the EOS R50 is said to feature a particularly easy, intuitive operating concept and score points with razor-sharp 4K video recording.

Via a rotating and swiveling touchscreen, the operation and focus is carried out at the touch of a button. The touchscreen interface, electronic viewfinder and simplified control layout are thus designed to enable professional use even by non-professionals.

The Creative Wizard automatically selects the ideal settings for different scenes, while Creative Bracketing offers multiple looks for each image. Handy for those who are not yet familiar with technical terms like ISO, shutter speed and the like.

Powerful video and photo features

However, technology is not neglected in the Canon EOS R50 either. The manufacturer relies on a 24.2-megapixel sensor in APS-C format, which should ensure sharp and detailed photos. Videos can be recorded in 4K UHD at 30 frames per second, whereby these come from the 6K sensor data via oversampling and therefore come up with more details.

The automatic focus bracketing, which is merged internally in the camera, guarantees sharpness when shooting close-up subjects. In addition, the camera is supposed to record with particularly low noise, which should result in higher contrasts and a better dynamic range for indoor shots.

The deep-learning algorithm of the autofocus recognizes people, animals and vehicles in order to quickly focus on subjects and precisely track the focus even with moving objects or people. With the mechanical shutter, continuous shooting at up to 12 frames per second is possible, with the electronic and silent shutter even up to 15 frames per second.

The EOS R50 is compatible with all RF lenses from the manufacturer, as well as with the wide range of EF lenses via adapters. Thanks to WLAN and Bluetooth connectivity, photos and videos can be transferred directly and also shared with the Camera Connect app. At the same time, the app offers a remote control function. It is also possible to use the EOS R50 as a webcam with UVC/UAC via a USB connection without additional software.

New zoom lens: RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM

Fittingly, Canon is introducing the RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM, a new zoom lens with a huge focal length range. It is said to be particularly suitable for distant subjects and portraits with beautiful bokeh (the background blur) and is intended to serve as a zoom complement to the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which is also offered in kit with the EOS R50, for example.

Prices and Availability

The Canon EOS R50 vlogging camera will be offered in black and white and is expected to make its way to retailers by the end of March 2023. It starts at an MSRP of 829.00 euros for the camera alone. The EOS R50 in kit with RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is priced at 949.00 euros.
