Canon introduces EOS R3 camera and three lenses

Shortly after Nikon presented the Z9, Canon is also launching a new flagship: with the EOS R3, the camera manufacturer is presenting a new model aimed at professionals.

A camera for professionals

Already visually, the new EOS R3 with its integrated portrait grip is reminiscent of the models in the EOS 1 series. The target group of photography professionals also overlaps. The new camera is supposed to convince with a new, stacked BSI CMOS sensor, whose resolution has not been announced yet. According to speculations, which refer to the features of the competing products, 50 to 60 megapixels can be expected.

The heart of the new camera is not the sensor, but the new autofocus, which Canon emphasized in the product presentation. In addition, there is the Eye Control function, which allows the focus point to be determined by eye movement in the viewfinder. This provides two options at once for particularly sharp and well-focused photographs. Other features of the EOS R3 include a continuous shooting speed of 30 frames per second and a magnesium housing that is sealed against dust and splash water.

Three new lenses

In addition to the camera, three new RF lenses were introduced, which are the successors to the previously established macro lenses in the series of the same name. The RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM lens, unlike its predecessor, is equipped with an additional spherical aberration control ring that can be used to deliberately control the bokeh effect. Likewise, the lens should convince with a magnification of 1.4:1 at close range, which the predecessor model can not offer. This creates the possibility of creating magnifying effects and enlarging subjects by a factor of 1.4 within the scope of the shot. The new lens is available for a price of 1,549 euros.

Also new to the market are the RF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF 600mm F4 L IS USM lenses, which are said to feature heat-repellent coatings, dust and splash protection, and refinements over their predecessors. The two super-telephoto lenses are expected to cost 13,000 and 14,000 euros, respectively.
