CES 2020: Kingston gives outlook on new products

Kingston introduced several new products at this year’s CES in Las Vegas. The storage media expert obviously focused on improving the performance of existing products. Especially the new NVMe-SSD, which has been equipped with a PCI-Express 3.0 interface, should be able to set new standards in terms of speed.

A new M.2 SSD was also introduced. This is based on an SMI controller, which offers a total of 8 memory channels. With the help of the new SSD, read speeds of up to 3,500 MB/s and write speeds of 3,000 MB/s should be possible. The market launch of the new SSDs is scheduled for the second quarter of 2020. How much the SSDs will cost is not yet known.

New SSD controllers

Kingston also plans to release SSDs that come with a PCI Express 4.0 interface. These SSDs will be based on a completely newly developed SSD controller from Marvell. In addition, these offer four memory channels. A release for these SSDs is planned for the third or fourth quarter. Also this SSD should come along with a breathtaking speed. In the case of access to 4K material, speeds of up to 500,000 IOPS should be possible thanks to the new controller.

A heat sink is not required

At first glance, the new SSDs seem to manage without a heat sink. This is probably made possible by the low waste heat. Conversely, they seem to have a low power consumption.

Update the KC600

The Kingston KC600 is to receive an update. This comes in a 2.5 inch case. Soon it will come along in an enlarged form with up to 2TB memory. However, the speeds will remain almost unchanged. Thus, the new version of the KC600 offers read speeds of up to 550 MB/s and write speeds of up to 500 MB/s.

2020, among other things, the popular KC600 is to have a successor.

New SD cards

Kingston introduced new SD cards at the CES in addition to the SSDs. In the future, a speed of up to 285 MB/s should be possible. The expert for storage media would like to offer its buyers optional card readers matching the SD cards. This could be quite practical in view of the increasingly slim notebooks with a shrinking number of connections.

News in terms of server

Although Kingston presents itself as an expert for storage media, the electronics manufacturer is also active outside of the hard drives. This became more than clear at the CES. With the DC450R, CD500R and DC500M, Kingston introduced three completely new models. The top model here is the DC500R. Capacities of up to about 8 TB should be possible here. In terms of speed the three models are very similar. All offer read speeds of a little over 550 MB/s and write speeds of 520 MB/s. Apart from the high speeds, the server models should be able to convince with a high durability.

More power thanks to Dual-Drive

Dual-Drive makes it possible to get the maximum performance out of two SSDs. For example, a speed of up to 3 GB/s can be achieved by connecting two SSDs together. This is made possible by PCI-Express-3.0, which uses two M.2 SSDs with NVMe protocol.

Effective processing of 8K videos

Kingston also introduced the DC1000M. This is an SSD that comes in the practical U.2 format. This should enable the fastest possible transfer rates. These fast transfer rates make live editing of the video possible without annoying delays. During the presentation Kingston demonstrated this process. Four SSDs were switched in the so-called RAID group. As a result, there were no problems whatsoever with regard to the corresponding bandwidth.
