CES 2023: Alienware m18 comes with 18 inch display

At this year’s CES, one company is once again particularly busy: Alienware. Dell’s gaming brand has updates of gaming notebooks and computers at the tech show in Las Vegas. However, the gaming experts also have a complete new introduction up their sleeves with the Alienware m18. This is a huge gaming notebook whose technical details sound promising. In addition to powerful CPU and GPU power, it is especially the 18-inch display that should attract a lot of attention with a refresh rate of a proud 480 Hz.

The Alienware m18 is not a notebook for the handbag

Some might feel incomprehension when taking a look at the Alienware m18. That’s not because of the components under the hood of the gaming notebook, but because of the sheer size. After all, the trend of gaming notebooks has actually gone towards 15 inch or even smaller screen sizes lately. Alienware doesn’t want to follow suit and takes a completely different path with its newcomer. With 18 inches, the IPS panel with a maximum resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels is even larger than the also presented Alienware x16. Optionally, you can also opt for a slightly lower-resolution, but significantly faster display.

This offers a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels and a refresh rate of a proud 480 Hz instead of “only” 165 Hz. Regardless of the display type you choose, you can look forward to modern gaming features in the area of variable refresh rates (VRR). Both screens are supposed to support AMD FreeSync as well as Nvidia G-Sync. A brightness of up to 300 nits should ensure that gaming is also possible in bright environments. The casing’s dimensions are correspondingly large. The notebook measures a total of 41 x 32 x 2.67 cm. However, Alienware does not yet tell us how heavy the XXL gaming notebook is.

Components promise great gaming enjoyment

The Alienware m18 offers a choice of three different processors. The powerful Intel Core i7-13650HX is already available in the basic version. If you want more power, you can alternatively opt for the Intel Core i7-13700HX or the Intel Core i9-13900HX. This means a maximum clock rate of 5.4 GHz in the top configuration. Of course, Nvidia’s flagships in the form of the latest GeForce 4000 series provide rich graphics performance. However, we do not yet know which GPUs of the series will be used exactly.

However, we can probably assume that everything will be possible up to the RTX 4090. Those who prefer a CPU from AMD, on the other hand, will have to be patient for a bit. Corresponding models are supposed to follow in the course of the second quarter of 2023. The Dell subsidiary wants to equip the Alienware m18 with a processor from AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series and optionally combine it with a GPU from AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 series. That Alienware will follow its words with actions in this regard is made clear by the also presented at CES 2023 AMD version of the Aurora R15 gaming machine.

Of course, the Alienware m18 is unlikely to be used by anyone as a mobile gaming notebook on the go. Nevertheless, it relies on an astonishingly large battery, which should definitely last a bit with a capacity of 97 Wh. The manufacturer also does not make any compromises in terms of storage. Up to 9 TB of storage space in the form of four M.2 SSDs is supposed to be possible. The top configuration also has a whopping 64 GB of RAM. Optionally, the big Alienware m18 is also supposed to be available with a CherryMX Low Profile keyboard.

Prices and availability

It should be ready in the first quarter of 2023. That’s when Dell wants to bring the Alienware m18 to retail. The gaming notebook will then cost at least $2,899 in the US.
