Nvidia presented a program at this year’s CES that can automatically upscale ordinary videos. The feature is intended for the RTX30 and RTX40 generations of graphics cards and is compatible with the Chrome and Edge browsers.
Experience with video games
Nvidia has already introduced a very similar feature in the past for use with video games. The now newly introduced GPU function clearly resembles the already existing one. However, the fact that the old function also works with graphics cards from the RTX20 generation is striking.
However, the functionality is identical: Low-resolution videos in the original are automatically upscaled by the graphics card. Sharpness and video clarity are supposed to increase, while block artifacts disappear. This requires enormous computing power, which apparently only the latest Nvidia cards can offer. The function, which works with the Chrome and Edge browsers, should be available from February.
4K resolution possible
If the GPU feature is enabled, all videos in both browsers will be automatically upscaled. No other actions need to be taken for this to work. For demonstration purposes, Nvidia has produced a video that is split in two: the left side shows the original version of a video, while the right side shows the scaled version. The original is in 1,080p resolution, while the scaled version reaches 4K.
According to Nvidia, videos with resolutions between 350 and 1444 pixels can be processed. Comparatively high frame rates of up to 144 hertz are also supposed to be processed without problems. Besides the scaling function, Nvidia also introduced some new graphics cards at the CES in Las Vegas.
