OpenAI has extended ChatGPT with the new “Tasks” function, which allows users to schedule tasks and set reminders. This extension positions ChatGPT as a versatile digital assistant that competes with established services such as Siri and Alexa.
- Task scheduling: Users can create one-off or recurring tasks, e.g. daily weather reports or reminders for important appointments.
- Automatic suggestions: Based on previous interactions, ChatGPT proactively suggests tasks that the user can accept or decline.
- Notifications: Completed tasks are communicated via push notifications or emails, regardless of whether the user is online.
Integration and management of the tasks function
To use the tasks function, users select “GPT-4 with scheduled tasks” in the model menu. They can then define specific tasks, such as “Remind me of my mother’s birthday on March 13”. These tasks are then automatically executed at the specified time.

Tasks are managed via a special menu that can be accessed via the profile picture. Here, users can view, edit or pause their active tasks. The number of simultaneously active tasks is currently limited to ten.
Extended functions and future developments
The introduction of the Tasks function is part of a series of enhancements designed to turn ChatGPT into a comprehensive personal assistant. Back in December, “Projects” were introduced, which make it possible to organize files and chat histories thematically so that ChatGPT can access relevant background information. In addition, a search function was implemented that provides real-time access to current information, although there is still room for improvement here.
With these developments, OpenAI is aiming to establish ChatGPT as a versatile digital assistant that is in direct competition with offerings from Apple, Google and Microsoft.
The Tasks function is currently in the beta phase and is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Teams users worldwide. An extension to the free version is planned for the future.
