Cherry KW X ULP: Flat mechanical keyboard presented

Cherry has introduced a new mechanical keyboard with the KW X ULP, which is particularly slim. Thus, it is supposed to combine the technical advantages of an ordinary mechanical keyboard with the optical ones of a slim keyboard – and that is a novelty in the keyboard manufacturer’s portfolio.

Ultra-low profile key switch

The mechanical keyboard is supposed to score points on a technical level primarily through its ultra-low profile keyswitches. At 3.5 millimeters, these have a 70 percent lower overall height than standard MX switches and thus enable the keyboard’s special design. They still offer all the advantages of conventional mechanical switches, such as a particularly precise typing feel. In addition, they offer anti-ghosting and N-key rollover functions, which ensure that every keystroke is recognized in every situation. Cherry specifies a service life of 50 million keystrokes.

Polycarbonate keycaps sit on the key switches, which are supposed to contribute to the keys being pleasant to use with their concave shape. Other features of the KW X ULP include Bluetooth 5.2 compatibility with two channels as well as connection options via USB-A and USB-C cable and wirelessly via USB dongle. This makes the keyboard particularly flexible to use. A USB-A and C cable as well as a USB dongle are included in the device’s scope of delivery.

Slim and elegant design

The device is also supposed to convince with its particularly flat appearance. Cherry relies on elegant minimalism here, which is not only evident in the low height, but also in the further design. The manufacturer largely does without flashy aspects and instead relies on elegant black and a silver aluminum plate. In addition, there is a monochrome backlight. The 640 gram keyboard measures 440 x 133 x 16 mm with folded-in feet; it measures 440 x 133 x 20 mm with folded-out feet. With the feet folded in, it is thus just as thin as the KW 920 Mini.

Rounding out the KW X ULP’s looks are lighting options for individual buttons, which are cleverly combined with function indicators. For example, the color of the illumination provides information about the connection status of the keyboard.

Price and availability

The new KW X ULP is available immediately directly from Cherry. From calendar week 20, it will also be available in retail stores. The recommended retail price is 249.99 euros.
