Crypto theft: $610 million returned

The Poly Network platform hit the headlines around two weeks ago, as a person unknown to date had managed to steal $610 million in cryptocurrencies from the platform. Now the loot has been fully returned.

Return in two phases

This marked the completion of the return process that had already begun shortly after the theft. As part of an initial return, much of the stolen money had already been returned to Poly Network. Now, the remaining approximately $141 million has been completed by sharing the private key needed to access the money with the platform. Poly Network made the full return public and thanked the unknown hacker for her cooperation. The company also announced that it was now starting to divide the sum back among the platform’s users, so that everyone would receive their cryptocurrencies housed there back in full. Only afterwards, normal operations would be resumed as soon as all now known security vulnerabilities had been closed, he added.

Hacker rejects reward

A reward of $550,000 offered by Poly Network for finding the security flaw has been rejected by the unknown hacker. She also rejected the offer to receive another $50,000 in exchange for the last private key, which is still missing until it is now handed over. In this context, it was also pointed out once again that it had been planned from the beginning to return the loot in full – an incentive was therefore not necessary.

Consequences open

Whether law enforcement agencies remain interested in tracking down the person behind the hack and bringing him to justice is not known. From a purely legal point of view, despite the return of the money, it is a criminal offense that can be punished accordingly. Reports that the IP address and the e-mail box of the person responsible have already been identified are unconfirmed so far. The further development remains to be seen accordingly.
