Cyberattack on Acer: A total of 160 GB of data captured

Acer is currently struggling with the consequences of a massive data leak. Cyber criminals were able to steal a total of 160 GB of sensitive data from the PC manufacturer in an attack. What could have serious negative consequences for the well-known Taiwan-based company should not be a problem for the customers. According to Acer, no customer data is affected.

Data from Acer was already for sale on the web

The trade with scammed data is currently flourishing again massively. In particular, ransomware groups are currently trying to hunt down companies willing to pay. Some of them are being belligerent. For example, the world-renowned tire manufacturer Continental does not want to pay a ransom to its attackers. Still others cannot do anything at all against the publication of scammed data. Acer is no exception. The PC manufacturer has once again fallen victim to a cyberattack. The attacker is already offering the captured data set with a total of 160 GB for sale on the Internet. The total of 2869 files is said to include sensitive internal company data. Starting with employee instructions and presentations to telephone information and back-end data, everything is said to be represented in the data set.

Offer deleted

After noticing that the record was even offered for sale on the net, the offer had also been removed. Why exactly this is the case, is so far still unclear. However, there cannot be too many explanations for this. Either the attacker found a buyer or Acer paid him to remove the data from the website. The third and final explanation could be that the attacker was afraid of being exposed and got cold feet after the offer became public. According to Acer, the corresponding attack is said to have occurred in mid-February. The company tells the website cybernews.com that the attacker is said to have used a data leak in the “document server for repair technicians”. Since no customer data was stored there anyway, Acer customers should not have to worry.
