Das Keyboard MacTigr: Mechanical low-profile keyboard for Mac presented

Keyboard manufacturer Das Keyboard, which is known for its high-quality peripherals, has introduced a new low-profile mechanical keyboard specifically for Mac users. Das Keyboard MacTigr comes in a sturdy metal case, offers a USB hub and features Cherry MX Red low-profile switches.

Das Keyboard MacTigr presented

Premium manufacturer Das Keyboard calls its latest creation, the MacTigr, a“mechanical reference keyboard for Mac users”. Accordingly, Das Keyboard only comes up with a Mac key label. Unlike, for example, the Logitech MX Mechanical, which we reviewed in May 2022, which also relies on low-profile mechanical switches, but can be used on Mac and Windows systems.

In any case, technically the MacTigr makes quite a splash. It comes with a sturdy, all-metal unibody case composed of gunmetal gray aluminum and a rugged matte black stainless steel plate.

In addition, the manufacturer integrates a super-speed USB-C hub with 2 ports that promise fast charging of connected devices and rapid data transfer. It is offered exclusively in black color, as well as with a full key layout including num pad.

The MacTigr is 436 mm long, 127 mm wide and 27 mm high and weighs in at 1,100 grams. Full N-key rollover is also offered.

Flat Cherry MX switches

The Das Keyboard MacTigr exclusively uses the linear Cherry MX Red low-profile switches, which are supposed to offer a life span of 100 million strokes and trigger with a force of 45 cN. The advance travel is 1.2 mm, while the total stroke is quantified at 3.2 mm.

Tactile brown switches or clicking Blue Switches, on the other hand, are unfortunately not offered, which is quite surprising in view of the productive usability of an Apple Mac. It is not entirely clear which keycaps are used.

On the one hand, the manufacturer promises the use of high-quality and particularly durable double-sided PBS keycaps, but in the technical specifications it then says that the EU layouts – including the German ISO layout – only come with ABS keycaps, which would be a shame.

On the other hand, no layout offers a backlight for the keys. The MacTigr also doesn’t offer fold-out feet in terms of ergonomics.

In return, there are four special keys in the upper right corner of the keyboard, which are responsible for media control and an energy-saving sleep key, which immediately puts the Mac into sleep mode. This is joined by a volume knob, which is already familiar from other keyboards from the manufacturer, such as the Das Keyboard X50Q (our review).

Price and Availability

The mechanical low-profile keyboard Das Keyboard MacTigr can be pre-ordered now directly from the manufacturer. The delivery is planned for mid-September 2022. The manufacturer’s recommended retail price is 219.00 Euros.
