Dell XPS 13 (9300) Notebook Gets 16:10 Display and Ice Lake Processors

In the run-up to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020, Dell has revised the design of the XPS 13 Ultrabook after about two years. The characteristically especially narrow display edges have become even thinner and now provide a screen-to-body ratio of 91.5 percent. Nevertheless, Dell has managed to integrate a 720p webcam above the new 13.4 inch screen on the XPS 13 (9300) in 16:10 format. Furthermore, the keyboard and touchpad have been enlarged and the processors have been updated to the Intel Ice Lake generation.

Unfortunately, in the course of the update, which made the already compact notebook even smaller, ports were also removed. USB 3.1 type C has been completely removed, so external hardware can now only be connected via two Thunderbolt 3 and a headphone jack. A microSD card reader is also installed.

Higher resolutions on the Dell XPS 13 (9300)

The 16:10 display of the Dell XPS 13 (9300) is already known from the 2-in-1 notebook XPS 13 (7390). The resolution of the 13.4-inch display is 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, optionally 3,840 x 2,400 pixels are available in the UHD version. The Full-HD display offers a maximum brightness of 500 cd/m², 100% coverage of the sRGB colour space, a contrast ratio of 1,800:1 and an optional touch function. The UHD version is also DisplayHDR-400 certified and covers 90 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. On the other hand, the contrast ratio of 1500:1 is somewhat lower.

New Intel Ice Lake U CPUs

Instead of relying on Comet Lake processors from Intel, as with the XPS 13 (9380), Dell uses Intel Ice Lake U series processors for the XPS 13 (9300). Available are the Core i3-1005G1 (2 cores, 4 threads, 1.20 GHz base clock, 3.40 GHz turbo clock), the Core i5-1035G1 (4 cores, 8 threads, 1.0 GHz base clock, 3.60 GHz turbo clock) and the Core i7-1065G7 (4 cores, 8 threads, 1.3 GHz base clock, 3.90 GHz turbo clock). The most expensive version also has 32 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD capacity. Up to now, only 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD capacity could be ordered in Germany, while customers in the USA could already access 2 TB before.

The capacity of the battery remains unchanged at 52 Wh and should thus provide power for up to 19 hours of use. However, the UHD display significantly reduces the battery life.

The Dell XPS 13 (9300) notebooks will already be on the market in Germany on January 7th. The prices are not yet known, though. In the USA, Dell charges 999.99 dollars plus VAT for the basic version of the notebook. In addition to the devices with Windows 10 Home and Pro, the so-called Developer Edition with Ubuntu 18.04 will also be released on February 4th, which will be available in the USA from 1,199 dollars.
