“DeLorean” to come: Back to the Future” on four wheels at last?

When the “Back to the Future” film trilogy conquered movie theaters worldwide in the 1980s, the focus was not only on the two iconic main characters, but also on one vehicle – the DeLorean. The hype surrounding the “Gullwing” is now to be revived. It is to go on sale as an electric car before the end of this year.

Perfect marketing

Series like “DARK” or “STRANGER THINGS” make it clear that the 80s are far from dead. Especially products, but also movie series from the iconic time are still celebrated in our pop culture today. From the 80s, the DeLorean now also wants to come proverbially “back to the future”. This has been announced by the DeLorean Motor Company itself. The marketing conditions could hardly be better. After all, the car manufacturer can tie in directly with the cult of the unique vehicle. In particular fans of the film series should then probably soon make the dream come true to have their own DeLorean in the garage.

An environmentally friendly sports car

With the worldwide known gullwing you can not (yet) dash into the future or the past, but apart from this missing feature it offers so much. That was already true of the original from the 1980s. Back then, the vehicle was launched in limited numbers and advertised as an exclusive sports car. The “DeLorean DMC-12” will not lose any of its sportiness in its revival. However, the manufacturer does not want to use gasoline, diesel or gas as fuel here. As befits a car in 2022, the newborn DeLorean is to be equipped with an electric motor.

Although the engine will change, the manufacturer is unlikely to change what is probably the most striking design feature – the gullwing doors. These can be clearly seen in the teaser video that has just been released. Apart from the doors, which are also familiar from the Tesla Model X, there seems to have been some changes. At least, this is suggested by the contours that can be seen in the short announcement video. The previously very angular outlines of the body seem to have turned into a much softer overall picture. A visual highlight is also the light effect, which can be seen in the front clasp.

More luck on the second attempt?

Even though one could quickly get the feeling that the DeLorean was already able to attract many buyers in its original version, this is by no means the case. The version from the 80s was built just 8,500 times. After that, things only went downhill and the company under the leadership of John DeLorean got into an economic mess. One of the reasons for this was the inferior quality, which made the vehicle no pleasure to drive on the road. The design marvel then achieved fame with its iconic role in director Robert Zemeckis’ blockbuster.

The downside is now expected to reverse, if the company’s motivated words are to be believed:

“DeLorean is luxury of the future, reinterpreted. With a 40-year heritage, DeLorean is shaping an iconic vision of our future mobility. With passion, innovation and technology, we confidently drive forward on our journey to electrification.”

Recycling was not possible

When you manufacture an electric car, it’s not environmentally friendly in every way. After all, the body also has to be made of metal and plastic. So it is all the more environmentally friendly to recycle old parts without further ado. This was also the original plan of the DeLorean Motor Company. However, the company is now unable to keep this promise after all. For this reason, the electric car is now being built from scratch after all. The advantage should be that we can expect a higher number of units than originally thought.
