DHL Packstation without display: How the new machines work

In April 2023, DHL announced that it would be converting around 1,100 of its older Packstations in Germany. Previously, the pick-up stations were operated via display, scanner, keyboard and printer; in the future, they will be controlled purely via the DHL app. Find out exactly how that works here.

App-controlled Packstations without a display – here’s how it works

Screenless Packstations have already been set up by DHL since 2020. Until now, these stations were called “Packstation kompakt”, but the addition will soon be dropped. The goal is to convert as many machines as possible to the new technology to make pickup and shipping even more flexible and convenient. Here’s how it works:

1. Registration

Register your smartphone for the Packstation and download the Post & DHL app to your Android or iOS device.

Tip: If your home-addressed shipment has been redirected to an app-controlled Packstation, you don’t need to register. In this case, you only need the Post & DHL app and the notification code.

2. Address shipment

Now enter your name, your postal number and the postal code and location of the desired Packstation as the delivery address. Once your package has arrived, you will be notified by email and in the Post & DHL app and receive your pickup code.

3. Pick up the package

Once you are in front of your Packstation, activate your Bluetooth and open the Post & DHL app. Then tap on the shipment you want to pick up in the Packstation area. The app will guide you through the next steps.

Send packages with or without a shipping label

To send packages to the new Packstations, you don’t need to register. Instead, simply open the Post & DHL app, navigate to the Packstation section and tap “Send.” Then follow the instructions to send your returns and prepaid packages. To do this, scan the shipment number on the package. Then select the tray size (or the size of the package) and place your shipment inside.

If you want to send parcels without an attached shipping label, you will need the shopping cart ID code of your shipping label or the return ID code for your return shipment. It works like this:

  1. Open the Post & DHL app and go to the Packstation area.
  2. Tap on “Send”.
  3. Add the shopping cart ID of your shipping label or the return ID (RET ID) of your return. You will find these codes under the QR code.
  4. Place the package without shipping label in the compartment you selected. Ready! The delivery staff will remove the package and print out the label for you.
