Disney+ price hike confirmed, promotional subscription to launch in December

The Disney+ streaming service is getting more expensive. As the company has now revealed in a press release, prices in the US will rise by a whole three US dollars per month from December. At the same time, however, also starts the new advertising subscription, which one has already held out in May.

Disney+ price increase from December

Disney+ pulls the prices. After Amazon Prime was recently already affected by a price increase, Disney’s streaming service will also become more expensive. Communicated were the new prices so far, however, only for the U.S., here the offer from 08 December 2022 by a whole three dollars more expensive.

Instead of 7.99 US dollars as before, customers will pay 10.99 US dollars a month from the end of the year. In this country, the subscription will cost 8.99 euros per month. Even though the Disney+ price increase has so far only been confirmed for the US market, it can be assumed that prices will also rise in Europe.

Streaming services, such as competitor Netflix, simply cannot maintain prices in the current market situation. Netflix lost around one million customers in the second quarter of 2022. Disney+ already raised prices a year ago, when prices in Germany rose from EUR 6.99 to EUR 8.99 for monthly payments, and from EUR 69.99 to EUR 89.99 for annual payments.

The price increase is presumably due at least in part to the fact that current blockbusters are increasingly finding their way into the streaming service shortly after their theatrical release. And that’s without additional costs, as was recently the case with the Marvel hit Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Disney+ promotional subscription launches December 08

At the same time as the price increase, however, Disney+ is also introducing the planned advertising subscription, which they already held out the prospect a few months ago. Here the advertising blocks with maximally four minutes advertisement per hour are to hold themselves however in borders.

However, the Disney+ advertising subscription will initially only be launched in the U.S. It is currently unclear whether and when it will come to Germany. Netflix is officially introducing its corresponding advertising model from 2023.

In exchange for having to endure advertising, the streaming service’s prices will naturally drop. In the case of Disney+ then, from 08 December 2022, 7.99 US dollars per month or 79.99 dollars annually will be called – so the same price that was previously due for the normal subscription.

“With our new ad-supported Disney+ offering and an expanded lineup of subscription models across our streaming portfolio, we’re giving consumers more choice at different price points to meet the diverse needs of our viewers and appeal to an even broader audience,” reveals Kareem Daniel, chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution.

When and with what prices the advertising subscription starts in this country, is currently still unclear. After all, Disney+ had already confirmed not to run advertising in the children’s program. Which is of course interesting for all those who have subscribed to the service primarily for their children.
