DJI also introduced its new action cam, the DJI Osmo Action 3, almost at the same time as the GoPro Hero 11 Black. In terms of design, the third model is again more oriented to the first, but comes with two touchscreens, better image stabilization and many other improvements.
The DJI Osmo Action 3 in detail
The modular design of its predecessor is a thing of the past with the DJI Osmo Action 3, which is once again based on the first model with its classic action cam look. However, this is to the benefit of the robustness, because here the Action 3 has the nose in front and is even waterproof up to 16 meters. With the waterproof case, even dives to a depth of 60 meters are possible.
The action cam measures 70.5 × 44.2 × 32.8 mm and weighs 145 grams. The new model also features two touchscreens: A 1.4-inch touch-sensitive screen with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels on the front and a 2.25-inch touchscreen with 360 x 640 pixels on the back.
DJI packs a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor with a 155-degree field of view and f/2.8 aperture, whose lens focuses from 30 centimeters and covers an ISO range of 100 to 12,800.
Videos are recorded by the action cam in maximum 4K resolution in 4:3 format with up to 60 fps or in 16:9 format with up to 120 fps. Slow-motion recordings are possible in 4K with 120 fps or in 1080p even with eightfold slowdown (240 fps). Photos takes the action cam with 12 megapixels.
Videos in portrait format
Another new feature of the DJI Osmo Action 3 is the ability to record videos in portrait mode. Via a vertical quick-release fastener, the action cam can thus also be easily mounted on a tripod.
The RockSteady 3.0 image stabilization has also been improved, which, in combination with HorizonSteady, should now ensure even more blur-free recordings. Three microphones are also installed, which record sound and also allow voice control.
The battery life of the included 1,770 mAh Extreme battery is also said to have improved. Up to 160 minutes of 4K videos are said to be recordable on a single charge, while the battery will record around 150 minutes even at -20 degrees Celsius.
Thanks to fast charging, a full charge of 50 minutes is also now much faster. It can be charged to 80 percent in just 18 minutes, which is enough to record for about two hours.
Price and Availability
The DJI Osmo Action 3 is available to order now directly from the manufacturer at an MSRP of €359.00 and will begin shipping on September 20, 2022. At a price of 459.00 euros, DJI also offers an “Adventure Combo” that includes three batteries, a charging case and a 1.5-meter extension pole.
