Doogee S98: Outdoor smartphone with dual-screen design

Doogee has announced a new addition to its resistant S series. The Doogee S98 is supposed to be launched at the end of March and is a smartphone for outdoor use that is resistant to drops and water. The back is undoubtedly one of the highlights. It not only has a camera with night vision, but also provides an overview of missed messages or other notifications via a dual screen.

Dual-screen design

In addition to the usual robust chassis, the dual-screen design of the Doogee S98 is particularly eye-catching. Thus, in addition to the main display, the S98 has a unique round rear display in the shape of a circle. It is supposed to be possible to customize the background of the rear display according to one’s own wishes. Most people will probably use the rear display to display a clock. But according to Doogee, you can also control the playback of current media here, for example.

Octa-core processor

Under the hood of the outdoor smartphone is the Helio G96 SoC from MediaTek. This octa-core processor offers a clock frequency of 2.05 GHz. That will not be able to keep up with any smartphone flagships, but the “fast performance” promised by Doogee seems to be quite realistic. The CPU is supported by 8 GB of RAM. Fast flash storage with a size of 256 GB offers enough space for pictures, videos and other media. If the built-in storage is not enough, you can expand it via micro-SD.

Unfortunately only LCD screen

OLED displays have now also arrived in the mid-range. It is all the more sad that Doogee equips its S98 with an LCD display. Compared with the competition, this should mean significant losses in the areas of color diversity and contrast. The built-in screen has a diagonal of 6.3 inches and a resolution of FHD+. Thus, the content should be razor-sharp in any case. To prevent ugly scratches or even cracks, Doogee equips its screen with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The display also houses the 16-megapixel selfie camera.

Triple camera hugs the rear display

On the back, Doogee installs a camera that is made up of three different lenses. These complete the special design by being evenly distributed around the second screen on the back. The installed main camera has a resolution of 64 megapixels. Furthermore, there is a night vision camera with a resolution of 20 megapixels. The third part of the triple camera is the wide-angle lens with 8 megapixels.

To provide sufficient illumination, the LED flashlight on the back is also used as a flash. This receives support from the infrared light. When you talk about the camera of the Doogee S98, you also have to talk about the night vision feature. This certainly enables fun shots that are not known from the competition – if Doogee keeps its promises. Thus, you should be able to take high-quality pictures even in pitch darkness.

Wireless charging is possible

A 6,000 mAh battery is supposed to ensure the outdoor smartphone’s staying power. This should be able to be charged with a power of 33 watts thanks to the fast charging function. Untypically, the Doogee S98 can also be charged wirelessly with a power of 15 watts. This is something we do not know in the outdoor smartphone sector and might be a good move by the manufacturer. Doogee once again relies on Android for the operating system. More precisely, Android 12 is used here.

The manufacturer guarantees the supply of security and software updates for at least three years. Of course, the S98 is also supposed to offer reliable protection against dirt and water. Here, Doogee shows a certification according to the IP68 standard. Even heavy rain showers should not damage the smartphone. The features are rounded off with NFC, dual-band WLAN, Bluetooth 5.1 and a fingerprint sensor on the side.

Price and availability

Exactly when the Doogee S98 will arrive is still unclear. However, the company states that the outdoor smartphone should launch before the end of March. Unfortunately, we do not know anything more about the price yet. However, Doogee will certainly comment on details soon.
