The popular trading platform eBay Kleinanzeigen already announced in August last year that it would be operating under a new name from 2024. Now the new name for eBay Kleinanzeigen is fixed. Quite uncreatively, one will then appear as “Classifieds”.
eBay Kleinanzeigen changes name
After the trading platform eBay Kleinanzeigen was already sold to the Norwegian online marketplace Adevinta in 2020, a name change and spin-off of eBay will be necessary. This is to be implemented from 2024.
CEO Paul Heimann had already announced last year that the brand name eBay Kleinanzeigen could still be continued in exactly the same way for a period of three years, i.e. until 2024. Including the logo.
Now one communicates in a press release that one agreed on a new name. From eBay Kleinanzeigen becomes soon simply classifieds. Fundamentally, however, nothing is to change in the Handesplattform for now, but new features are to be offered shortly.
“Classifieds remains classifieds. An online classifieds market for all with the radiance of one of the best-known brands in Germany, “ reveals CEO Paul Heimann. As recently as April 2022, the platform also enabled purchase on account, which in turn would be handled via the Klarna platform.
“We are developing into a platform on which users, if they so wish, can handle the entire buying or selling process – from ordering to payment to shipping”, explains Paul Heimann.
Classifieds with new “Buy Direct” option
Shortly, with “Buy Directly” a new form of trading in classifieds will be introduced. The new option is intended to noticeably speed up buying or selling via the platform. If private sellers post an item with a fixed price on the platform, interested parties can buy it directly from now on. No need for prior contact or lengthy negotiations.
For this purpose, the “Secure Payment” function is used, which handles the entire purchase transaction. To do this, sellers must have stored their bank details on the platform and can have the transaction processed via the platform as part of the process.
The seller receives a confirmation of receipt of payment and the address that the buyer has provided for delivery. If the buyer confirms receipt of the goods, the money is paid out. Otherwise, the payment is made automatically after 14 days. The system gives both sides an additional level of security. If the payout is confirmed by eBay Kleinanzeigen, the transfer is made within 24 hours.
More security: two-factor authentication is coming
Kleinanzeigen is also providing an additional level of security by introducing risk-based two-factor authentication, which is said to be planned for the next few weeks. If there are any anomalies during the registration process, for example due to different locations or conspicuous addresses, a second factor will be required for registration – for example by confirmation via e-mail.
“For several months, there has been an increase in phishing attacks in connection with online classifieds. In one scam, fraudsters pick up phone numbers from the ad inventory of affected users and contact them via SMS or WhatsApp,” the company continues.
In the process, the scammers suggest a payment via “Pay securely”, by so-called eBay delivery or a courier service and send a phishing website, on which credit card or account details are to be specified. According to the company, even chat bots or a supposed live chat with customer service are used. Functions that eBay Kleinanzeigen does not even offer.
