Electromobility: New registration record for e-cars in 2021

The hype surrounding cars with electric drives does not seem to be dying down. The opposite is the case. It has now become known that a total of 880,000 new e-cars were registered in the entire EU in 2021.

Meanwhile, the triumph of electric cars seems unstoppable. In 2021, for example, the number of newly registered e-cars increased by 63 percent compared to the previous year. Given the problems attributable to chip shortages and other corona-related bottlenecks, this is truly remarkable. But it wasn’t just pure electric cars that saw an increase in sales. Plug-in hybrids experienced even greater hype, with a 71 percent increase in registrations. Looking at vehicles with conventional diesel or gasoline engines, however, the picture is somewhat different. While registrations of gasoline-powered vehicles fell by about 18 percent, they actually shrank by 32 percent for diesel vehicles.

Great Hype in Germany

If we now focus on Germany, the hype surrounding the e-car becomes even clearer. Here, registration figures for purely electric cars actually rose by 88 percent compared to 2020. Cars with gasoline engines, on the other hand, were registered almost 30 percent less frequently. The situation is even more serious for diesels, which have shrunk by around 36 percent. Given the strong reorientation of classic German car brands such as VW and Mercedes, this is hardly surprising. After all, they are making driving an electric car increasingly attractive. Government subsidies for electromobility are also a major incentive for a “fuel switch” among many car buyers. And that’s not likely to change anytime soon. In addition to the guaranteed tax exemption until 2025, the traffic light coalition has also decided that the so-called innovation premium will be paid until 2025. With these incentives, who would still want to buy a combustion engine?
