Emission-free: California uses “Crimson Storage” energy storage system

The US state of California has reached another milestone on the road to emission-free energy generation. With “Crimson Storage” (project website), the state on the west coast of the USA aims to skillfully compensate for weather-related failures in energy generation.

Crimson Storage is second largest battery in the world

The fact that the future belongs to renewable energies is probably on everyone’s mind by now. After all, the still ongoing Ukraine war makes it clearer than ever what problems dependence on fossil energy sources also means for us. It is not without reason that power generation from wind, sun and water is now also called freedom energies. However, renewable energies bring with them one problem – a lack of consistency. While gas-fired power plants, for example, can produce the same amount of electricity day after day, with sun and. Co are dependent on the weather. So not only do you have to cope with days when no solar energy can be collected due to a gray sky. On the other hand, there are days when blue skies and bright sunshine mean that you can’t use the mass of energy at all.

To solve this problem, China tested in June this year whether solar energy could be collected in space. However, it will probably be many years before this successful project reaches the masses. Suitable storage solutions are therefore needed to be able to use the energy collected under optimal conditions when conditions are poor. California is now demonstrating how this works. With “Crimson Storage,” the U.S. state has connected the world’s second-largest battery to the grid in order to be able to store energy in the event of a power surplus. The data on the gigantic battery is truly impressive. It is said to have a capacity of 350 megawatts. A storage capacity of up to 1,400 megawatt hours also speaks for itself. This would cover the annual consumption of 350 average German households with four people. The dimensions of the huge battery are correspondingly expansive. It occupies a total of 2000 hectares.

California becomes a role model for environmental protection

A look at Germany paints a contrary picture. In this country, for example, we still have to contend with too few charging stations. The governor of California, Gavion Newsom, makes it clear what the goal is. For example, the U.S. state wants to be able to produce its electricity with zero emissions as soon as possible. If projects like “Crimson Storage” continue to be pursued so meticulously, this plan can certainly be put into practice in a few years. Especially if the gigantic battery is accompanied by a suitable solar park, this could be a groundbreaking pilot project. The area, which is paved with photovoltaic systems, should be able to produce an impressive 350 megawatts and is thus optimally matched to the absorption capacity of “Crimson Storage”. We can only hope that suitable storage facilities will increasingly be created in the rest of the world as well. After all, it is these that are currently still holding back the spread of renewable energies.
