FiiO DM15 R2R: Portable CD player with R2R DAC and Hi-Res features

FiiO is relaunching the portable CD player with the DM15 R2R, a model that combines classic disc playback with modern Hi-Res technology. The device combines CD playback, a specially developed R2R DAC, powerful headphone amplification, Bluetooth transmission and USB DAC function in a compact housing. FiiO is thus targeting users who want to use their CD collection on the move and on their desktop in high quality – far removed from the nostalgic Discman, but rather as a fully-fledged hi-fi source.

  • Portable CD player with in-house developed, fully differential 24-bit R2R DAC and headphone amplifier.
  • Powerful output: up to 310 mW (unbalanced) and 1150 mW (balanced) per channel for demanding headphones.
  • USB DAC up to 384 kHz/32 bit and DSD256, plus Bluetooth transmitter with aptX variants for wireless listening.
  • 4700 mAh battery with around 7 hours running time, desktop mode and price around 249-269 euros depending on the market.

R2R DAC and amplifier: CD classics in hi-res guise

At the core of the DM15 R2R is a fully differential 24-bit R2R DAC developed by FiiO, which is based on a resistor array with 192 precise thin-film resistors, distributed over four channels with 48 components each. The tight tolerance of 0.1 percent and the low temperature drift should ensure that the playback combines the typical warm, analog character of classic CD players with the precision of modern converters. The DAC is complemented by an amplified headphone output: Compared to its predecessor, the DM13, the output power has increased significantly, with around 310 mW per channel at the unbalanced 3.5 mm output and up to 1150 mW per channel at the balanced 4.4 mm connection in powerful modes, which provides sufficient reserves for many over-ear hi-fi headphones. This clearly positions the DM15 R2R in the audiophile segment, in which portable players are increasingly functioning as an all-in-one solution for on the go and at the desk.

The housing is made from a combination of aluminum and tempered glass, with a transparent or partially transparent cover revealing the CD artwork. Despite this premium look, the player remains compact enough for mobile use and has a clearly legible display and classic controls with buttons and volume control. The internal architecture is divided into five central components: CD servo, USB DAC section, R2R module, Bluetooth unit and a dedicated MCU to control the operating modes. Electronic Skip Protection (ESP) and a high-voltage 4700 mAh lithium battery are also integrated for use on the move, which should provide around seven hours of continuous operation, while an external power supply saves the battery in desktop mode.

More than just a Discman: USB DAC, Bluetooth transmitter and CD ripping

The DM15 R2R is not limited to pure CD playback, but can also be used as a USB DAC on a PC, Mac, smartphone or laptop. In this mode, the device supports PCM signals up to 384 kHz/32 bit as well as native DSD256, which clearly takes it into Hi-Res territory. The player also functions as a Bluetooth transmitter that supports various codecs such as aptX, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD and SBC via the Qualcomm QCC3095 chip; depending on the firmware version, some sources also report LDAC support. Audio can be streamed both from the inserted CD and from a USB input via Bluetooth to compatible headphones or speakers, making the player a flexible control center in the setup.

For users who want to back up their collection digitally, the DM15 R2R offers a CD ripping function: tracks can be transferred to a connected computer in WAV format during playback. Various sound personalization options are also available: Three BASS modes and eight EQ presets can be combined and offer up to 24 preset sound profiles, including a special “RETRO” mode designed to simulate an analog, more powerful tuning. The device is controlled via a front display, mechanical buttons, a classic volume knob and an included remote control, making it easy to operate both on the move and in the living room.

Battery life, variants and price

The device is powered by a 4700 mAh battery, which provides around seven hours of playback in normal operation, depending on the volume, output type and selected mode. Charging is via USB-C with support for fast charging standards such as PD2.0/PD3.0, which means the battery should be fully charged again in around two hours. A desktop mode is available for use on the desk, in which the device is operated directly from the external power source to conserve the battery in the long term. The DM15 R2R is announced in four color variants: silver, red, black and white, with silver and red initially available at market launch, while black and white will follow towards the end of December.

According to current information, worldwide availability will start in 2025, with deliveries from the beginning of 2026, depending on the region and retailer. In English-speaking countries, the player is priced at around 249.99 pounds, 249 US dollars or around 269 euros, with individual reports stating a market launch at 269 to 269.99 US dollars. In view of the R2R DAC, powerful headphone amplifier, Bluetooth transmitter, Hi-Res USB DAC and CD ripping, this price range seems plausible – especially in comparison to the cheaper DM13, which is already positioned as a niche product for CD enthusiasts. FiiO thus serves a growing target group that is turning away from pure streaming and wants to rediscover physical sound carriers with modern technology.
