FritzOS 8.24 Beta: These FritzBoxes receive the update

With the current lab update, AVM is supplying a total of six routers with a new beta version of FritzOS 8.24. These include both established models and a newcomer that is being upgraded to the new version for the first time. The following FritzBoxes are now participating in the test program:

  • FritzBox 7690 – Version 8.24-129020 (new in the lab)
  • FritzBox 7590 AX – Version 8.24-128970
  • FritzBox 7590 – Version 8.24-128966
  • FritzBox 7530 AX – Version 8.24-128821
  • FritzBox 7530 – Version 8.24-128808
  • FritzBox 6690 Cable – Version 8.24-128596

While the models in the 75 series already have experience with FritzOS updates, the update for the FritzBox 7690 marks a new start in the lab. The new features are correspondingly extensive. AVM is thus continuing its strategy of testing new functions step by step via the lab program before they find their way into stable versions.

Stability and detailed improvements are the focus of the update

For the FritzBox 75 series, the focus of FritzOS 8.24 is clearly on fine-tuning and reliability. AVM has further optimized system stability and fixed a bug that caused the display of DNS servers in the online monitor to be incomplete in certain scenarios. This correction provides more transparency and better troubleshooting, especially in more complex network environments.

The FritzBox 6690 Cable also benefits from targeted adjustments. In the Internet area, new root certificates from SSL.com have been integrated to further secure DNS over TLS. In addition, a revised display in the online monitor ensures that entries with 0 Mbit/s are hidden, which significantly improves the overview. For telephony, AVM has also added new certificates for encrypted VoIP to further increase security. Overall, the update is compact, but addresses key points relating to security and ease of use.

FritzBox 7690: Extensive re-entry with FritzOS 8.24

The update for the FritzBox 7690, which celebrates its comeback in the lab with FritzOS 8.24, is much more comprehensive. The initial update brings with it over 20 adjustments and new features and lays the technical foundation for future functions. Even if AVM does not highlight every change in detail, the scope of the patch notes shows that the router is now fully integrated into the current FritzOS development.

The re-entry signals that AVM wants to focus more on the FritzBox 7690 in the future. With FritzOS 8.24, the model not only receives the latest functions, but also the prerequisite for further updates in the coming months. This makes it clear that the lab program will continue to play a central role in the further development of the FritzOS ecosystem.

Installation of the FritzOS 8.24 beta

The new beta firmware is installed as usual via the Fritz Lab. After downloading from the AVM website, the update is installed via the FritzBox user interface under “System” > “Update” > “FritzOS file”. Before installing, we recommend using the latest stable FritzOS version and creating a backup of the settings. This allows you to easily restore the previous status in the event of problems.

Conclusion: FritzOS 8.24 brings fine-tuning and a preview of upcoming functions

With FritzOS 8.24, AVM relies on a mixture of stability improvements, security adjustments and targeted detail corrections. While the 75 series models primarily benefit from optimizations, the extensive initial update of the FritzBox 7690 marks an important step for its future. The beta firmware is now available in the Fritz Lab and can be used free of charge.

It is not yet clear when FritzOS 8.24 will be released as a stable version, but this should follow once the test phase is complete. If you don’t want to play around with the beta, you can find the latest stable version in the recently released FritzOS 8.20.
