AVM presented the FRITZ!Smart Gateway at MWC 2023, which is intended to expand the possibilities of smart home control via a FRITZ!Box. With it, it is possible to integrate devices via the Zigbee wireless standard.
Zigbee for advanced options
The Zigbee wireless standard was most recently integrated by AVM into two new fiber routers. With the FRITZ!Smart Gateway, there is now also the option of integrating devices into the smart home via Zigbee. The number of compatible devices thus increases significantly. Previously, only the DECT ULE/HAN FUN radio standards were used, which significantly limited the options for operating a smart home network. From now on, Philips Hue bulbs or lights from IKEA, for example, can be connected to the FRITZ!Box, which was not possible before. AVM has announced that it will soon provide a complete list of smart home components compatible with the new FRITZ!Smart Gateway.
The FRITZ!Smart Gateway can be connected to a FRITZ!Box via WLAN. Once the connection is established, it acts as a central interface in the smart home. It is ready for operation as soon as it is plugged into a socket. Unlike many other smart home devices from AVM, however, it does not serve as a WLAN repeater. Instead, the device provides a LAN port with a speed of up to one Gbit per second as well as a USB port that can be used to charge mobile devices. Furthermore, there are LED indicators on the device that provide information about the status of Zigbee, DECT and WLAN.
FRITZ!Smart Gateway: price and availability
It is not yet known when the new device will hit the market and expand the smart home options significantly beyond AVM’s own products. There is also no information yet on the price that the manufacturer wants to call.
