With the Gates Moto X5, manufacturer Gates Carbon Drive has introduced a new type of belt drive aimed at electric motorcycles and scooters. It is said to operate particularly quietly and smoothly, enabling quieter operation.
Gates Moto X5 is said to make electric bikes quieter
A full 15 decibels quieter than a classic chain drive, the Gates Moto X5 belt drive is said to operate more quietly when used in electric motorcycles and scooters, across a range of speeds, promises at least manufacturer Gates Carbon Drive in its introduction to the product.
It offers the same advantages as other belt drives from the manufacturer and operates particularly quietly, cleanly as well as smoothly and also turns out to be particularly robust. This is made possible by a new drive technology.
The Moto X5 relies on a combination of high link stiffness, durable synthetic materials and Gates’ already familiar carbon fiber strand. Unlike a classic chain drive, such a belt drive requires neither oiling nor cleaning. There is also no need to check the tension – so the convenience turns out much higher.
Higher ranges possible
Furthermore, the new drive is said to be more energy efficient over the lifetime of an electric motorcycle or scooter and under normal conditions, increasing the range of an e-vehicle.
The Gates Moto X5 belt drive was developed primarily for mid-motor electric scooters and motorcycles with the Asian market in mind.
However, the drive is also likely to be used in Germany – after all, more and more e-bikes are also relying on belt drives from Gates Carbon Drive. However, it is still unclear when and in which models the new belt drive will make its debut.
Electric motorcycles such as the LiveWire S2 Del Mar or electric scooters continue to enjoy growing popularity. In Asia in particular, the number of registrations increased sharply last year.
