Since the beginning of 2022, owners of e-cars have been able to earn money with their vehicles. This is made possible by the so-called greenhouse gas reduction quota, known as the GHG quota. It makes driving an electric car even more financially attractive, lets you earn money and save money. Without much effort, you can also donate part of the premium to good causes in the area of the Ukraine war.
What is the GHG quota?
Thanks to the greenhouse gas reduction quota or GHG quota, owners of an electric car have been entitled to cash bonuses of up to 350 euros per registered e-car since the beginning of the year. This is made possible by a new law, which the German government passed.
From a tax perspective, however, the maximum amount must be taxed as “other income.” At least if you exceed the exemption limit of 256 euros in a calendar year according to § 22 III EstG.
Staying below the exemption limit and donating an amount
To stay below the exemption limit, various GHG providers use a clever trick and only pay out a reduced GHG premium of a maximum of 255 euros. The remaining 95 euros up to the maximum amount can be donated to a good cause.
Reputable portals such as Jucify, Smartificate or Money for eAuto allow donating the difference in just a few steps and without much effort to aid organizations entrusted with various projects in support of the Ukraine war.
GHG bonuses also for e-motorcycles and scooters
However, not only electric cars benefit from the GHG quota, but all vehicles with electric propulsion, including e-motorcycles and e-scooters. At least if it is a two-wheeler that travels faster than 45 km/h and is equipped with an official insurance license plate. If this is the case, GHG premiums of up to 400 euros per year beckon.
Those who regularly make use of the subsidy can thus greatly reduce the purchase price of electric vehicles. Basic requirements are, however, that the driver himself or herself is listed as the owner and that the note “electric” is listed in field P.3 of registration certificate I.
Two revenue models
Who wants to secure the GHG quota at one of the reputable portals, can usually choose between two revenue models. The best price sale relies on real-time trading in the GHG quota market and sells the quota at the best possible rate. Alternatively, a fixed price model is also offered, in which the above-mentioned 255 euro payout comes into play.
