Google Chromecast HD: Cheap streaming stick for 40 euros

Around two years after the Chromecast with Google TV, the manufacturer has introduced a new and even cheaper model that competes with Amazon’s Fire TV stick. The new Google Chromecast HD costs less than 40 euros, but only resolves in Full HD – however, including HDR.

Google Chromecast HD: High resolution, low price

After the Chromecast with Google TV, which the Internet giant launched in October 2020, they now announced a cheaper sibling model with the Google Chromecast HD. Visually, the new model strongly resembles the Chromecast 4K and even the feature set is largely the same.

However, there are differences in terms of resolution, because the new model only resolves in Full HD quality, i.e. with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. However, this is also in HDR (High Dynamic Range).

Included are Google TV, which provides access to various streaming apps and plays out personalized recommendations. The remote control with voice recognition via Google Assistant is also included in the new model. This also makes it possible to control the smart home.

More modern than the 4K model

One advantage of the Google Chromecast HD is its more modern features. Thus, the HD model, unlike the 4K variant, is able to display videos in the AV1 codec. In addition, the newer Amlogic S805X2 chip is used.

Of course, the Chromecast works particularly well with Android smartphones and tablets and can, for example, put content from Google Search directly on the watch list. The Chromecast HD also uses Android 12 as its operating system, while the 4K model is based on Android 10.

Of course, it is also compatible with Google’s cloud gaming service Stadia. Games can be streamed directly to the TV in combination – provided you have a corresponding controller.

Price and Availability

The Google Chromecast HD is available now in white directly at the Google Store, as well as at Amazon. The MSRP is 39.99 euros, while the 4K model costs 69.99 euros.
